Yeah, there’s a fine line.

The union has to protect the Astros players but at the same time they might be outnumbered by the all the pissed off players league wide.

I’ll preface this by saying Manfred is a colossal jackass, but he was in a no win situation. I’m not saying he handled it well, and his comments were about the worst you can make, but no matter what he was screwed.

The only thing I think he could have done was suspend the Astros for the next two postseasons or something like that. Suspending players would have been impossible. And he needs to keep an open relationship with the union with the CBA expiring after 2021. Also, I think he was blindsided by the outrage the players showed to Houston. And I was surprised too apparently this wasn’t as common as I thought.

That said, as you mentioned, Manfred is a colossal jackass that deserves everything bad said about him after Sunday’s comments

And to be honest, I’m bringing preexisting feelings into my decision re: Manfred. He’s an idiot and has not been good in this job. I’m hoping this is the last straw.

He might not get fired but there’s a reckoning coming. Enough players have publicly called him a ****ing idiot and he can’t let that slide.

Like all commissioners, Manfred's job is to draw hate on himself rather than the owners. And he's really good at it!

Even if he ends up getting fired over this (ie, being painted as the scapegoat in a situation where MLB has zero good options), he'll still have done his job. And he'll be rewarded with a giant going away check for it.
