What did you have for dinner II?

Yeah, it would need a “-shire” on the end to rate that “shur”.

From Asheville’s only local network TV (the others are in Greenville SC, dammit):
What's the correct pronunciation of Leicester?

It was interesting to hear the history and how the original name of the town was Lickskillet.

I wondered how they got that name but found two different conflicting stories.

One story had this story about Lickskillet NC,
“Following the Civil War roving bands of thieves plundered the section for food. Mrs. Turner Proffitt fed many returning hungry Confederate soldiers—and also some of the armed robbers. One day a band of thieves appeared and demanded food at gun point. “Gentlemen, there isn’t anything here to cook”, she told them, “You have licked the skillet clean.”

Another story said this....
Leicester Chapman moved there when the town was called “Turkey Creek”.
Records show that it was in 1859 that Turkey Creek was renamed to “Leicester”.
The folks in Asheville objected to the name change and thought that Leicester sounded way too highfalutin for their tastes. They mocked the name by calling people that lived in Leicester “lick skillets”.

I lived in North Carolina for a few years, may be wrong but I believe you pronounce it Lester.

My sister lives in Weaverville. I was visiting and needed to go to Leicester, and was talking to the manager of a restaurant in weaverville about the best way to get to the part of Leicester that I wanted to get to. We both called it Lester when the people in line behind me said "its Lei chester". They said they had been trying to get people to pronounce it correctly since they moved to the area.
I have visited the town of Leicester, England, and stayed at a hotel near Leicester Square in London. DW and I were in a cab near the end of the day in London, and I requested to be let off near "Leichester" Square. I was politely corrected by our driver. I told him in the US we want to make sure we pronounce every syllable.
I was working with an attorney in Asheville, and there was someone from the Leicester Utility District there. I asked him how the people there pronounced Leicester, and he said Lester.
I had assumed the name came from England.

Thanks, we do like to eat. The wife is an awesome cook. So I had a great teacher when I decided to learn to cook beyond the grill/smoker.

That's so sweet! Kevin does all the grilling/smoker stuff, and I do anything stove top/oven, but if either is extensive we are helping each other out. Cooking at home is so nice.
