Our Biggest Question?

Kinda hard to do when its 8-9 guys in the box. The way to run the ball is to get a guy who can actually back people out of the box with the pass. Over that same time frame that u say we couldnt run it JG, Dormandy, McBride, Chryst, Maurer, and Shrout were the Qbs. U add the oline we had over that span and we probably couldn't run the ball on Whitehaven High School let alone SEC defenses.
We haven't had an opponent stack the box since Kelly was our rb.

On offense, the passing game in total. QBs and WRs. Too much unknown there.
On defense, the LBs. Replacing a lot of talent.
Could be a season of growing pains... especially early.

Burrow’s 1st year at LSU was his acclimation year and 2nd was breakout. He hasn’t had as many starts as JG.

JG has had 3 years already. I think we’ve seen the peak.
Last year was JG's acclimation year in another new o with another new coordinator. This could be his breakout year.

Now u done lost your mind. He left in 2017 and JG has basically been the starter at qb the last 2 yrs. Everybody and their momma knows to stop our run game an make JG beat you. Tell me why on earth would anybody play the pass instead of the run when we havent had a competent qb since Dobbs. Even then teams wanted to make Dobbs beat them throwing so they stacked the box. Heck we can go back to Tee Martin and teams would stack the box bc we we were a run 1st team. This is why he was able to playaction deep to Peerless etc... We have only had a handful of guys after Peyton were u had to respect their throwing ability to be honest

Quick: what is the Vols' biggest question as we go into the 2020 season?

If your knee-jerk response was "who's the quarterback?" I'm with you. That would be mine, too.

ESPN's Alex Scarborough seems willing to assume that question away, when he writes: "Let's suppose that ... quarterback Jarrett Guarantano turns a corner as a fifth-year senior."

No idea why he leapt past that huge unknown.

To his credit, what he honed in on instead is a very good secondary question:

Here's the full article:

Biggest 2020 question for each Top 25 team

Yep, for me it's primarily who our QB is in 2020. With the right answer there, the WR group will fill out just fine.

Go Vols!

Linebacker. We lost DT and Bituli. We didn’t lose anyone at QB (yet) and we gained some talent there. We will be better than fine at RB this year with no drop off and more talent. We will have a good and experienced OL for once in a long time... these kids run all over teams this year. We have seen a lot of potential in both Palmer and Keyton. We can hope Tootoo fills Bituli’s shoes, but who fills his and who fills DT’s? We will see.

My biggest question is, are we REALLY significantly better or is it fools gold due to benefitting from a weaker back end schedule last season? My thing is, if you take away the wins and just look at how we played in those last few games, we really didn't look that great, especially offensively. I hope JG finds another gear in the offseason or Bailey ends up being everything we hope he can be as a freshman.

Our last 2 games both Vandy and Indiana dropped 7 into coverage the whole game. Teams are not stacking the line against our offense, they are doing the exact opposite in reality.

Vols have a bunch of upper classmen across the board, their experience and leadership will make the difference. I think Vols get off to a fast start next year winning the 1st 6 games.

That is just wrong. We regularly get 7 in coverage vs a four man front. We are much better passing so teams try to stop the pass first.

We're going to be fine @ QB. Same's true for DBs & LBs. On the FLIPSIDE we need even better edge rushers...even better than last year's, and on the OL...on the outside...TE's need to take a big step forward. Same for STs except FG production. General Pruitt now has more to work with & if-if-if we were to land all three of these chess pieces, 2020 will be exciting & 2021 could be awesome!

If we were better passing the ball then their wouldnt be a qb competition so stop it

Did u not just see the beating JG took in 2018??? Those were not 4 man fronts those were 0 coverage blitzes and most of the time those were DB's coming off the edge drilling him. When Dobbs was the guy the narrative was always can he throw well enough for them to win. Thats fact. I dnt think some of us understand that if u cant throw the ball then u wont be able to run it. This is the SEC not Conference USA. U are not going to line up every week and run it without the threat of u passing it.

We are better passing than running. They rotate backs because none stand out. Just stop.
Why do u think u need 1 guy to be the main guy in order to have a good run game??? Bama regularly use multiple backs so does Fla, Uga, and Auburn. U dnt need 1 guy to rush for 1500 if u have 3 guys that can rush for 500. If we could throw as well as u say then we would not have gotten blown off the field in 2018 vs West Virginia and their trash big 12 defense. We also would have blown the doors off Ga st, and BYU if we threw the ball like u say we do. Why do u think there are 6 qbs fighting for the job???? U show me a top rushing team that has had the oline and qb play we had the last 2-3 yrs ill wait

That doesnt even make since. Gray ran for 300 on Vandy so why would they be playing coverage??? Indiana played alot of coverage in the second half but that was becuase they had a 2 score lead
