'16 AL WR Velus Jones (Transfer)

I’ve always thought of Joseph as butlers replacement...I’m glad we have those four spots to be honest...give me beckwith and hardy in the class and Roche and Jones as transfers and I’ll be a happy dude
Roche is looking at the roster and wondering if he’d even play here. But yeah, Butler got the git when it became clear that we were getting Joseph.

Here’s something you have to think about: who replaces Calloway on Teams? Velvet would come in with his own nickname and the ability to return punts and kicks. Plus I know Tee and Chaney wanna platoon 6 guys at WR in a game (2X, 2Y, 2F). But other than 5, who has really earned a spot in there yet?

All good points...I particularly like the one about his nickname 😂...although I prefer ”Vellas Hellas Jones”...that was always one of my favorite beers at the Copper Cellar

Palmer, Johnson, Keyton, Tillman, Gibbs, Hyatt, J Calloway, Beckwith(?). Definitely thin. Holiday might be playing there out of need if we have more than 2 injuries to that group

Gibbs, Gray, Chandler are probably going to be the first ones up at returner just for stability. Speed guys coming in would take over the next year.

chandler split duties with callaway at times...he could do it.

but with te influx of some speed coming in, if a guy like Holiday or Hyatt proves dependable, maybe they get a look.

I don’t think this is a year two kind of staff, though. If you’re the best and you can do it, they’ll play you now. I could see Calloway or Hyatt getting reps (or even Small) if they can get it done. But I think the whole point of offering Jones is because he’s a known commodity.

His decision comes after a campaign in which he failed to find a foothold in one of the Trojans’ deepest rotations. As other receivers passed him up on the depth chart, Jones didn’t record a catch until mid-October. He finished the season with six catches for 35 yards, his lowest totals since he arrived at USC.

Jones nearly left the program after he entered the transfer portal in March. The Alabama native briefly considered following former Trojan offensive coordinator Tee Martin to Tennessee.

But Jones opted to stay at USC in hopes that its new Air Raid would provide ample opportunity to spread the ball out to a cadre of different receivers. Those circumstances ultimately didn’t play out as planned, as the Trojans’ high-powered offense primarily fed its top four receivers instead.
USC's Velus Jones Jr. enters the transfer portal again

Jones arrived at USC as the least-heralded receiver in the loaded class of 2016, but he stood out because of his blazing speed. After redshirting in Year 1, he found a role as a jet sweep specialist, though the result of those plays were limited. He had six catches for 46 yards and five rushing attempts for 15 yards.

...In 2018 his role increased just slightly. He had 24 receptions for 266 yards and a touchdown while scoring one rushing touchdown on six attempts for 13 yards.

It’s not clear if Jones Jr. will leave the Trojans as a graduate transfer, but he is a redshirt junior. The likelihood is he will be immediately eligible to play wherever he lands.

Sounds like another Tyler Byrd
