Pro Football Focus not impressed with our OL play this year

So why were we 12th in the SEC in rushing? Maybe you can blame a little of it on struggles at QB, but it wasn’t like we absolutely couldn’t stretch the field with the passing game.
Rb play was below avg. Chandler and Jordan are pedestrian and on their best days only average. Gray finally showed out the last two games.

Our OL was not good this year. There were moments when things clicked, but not consistent enough to compete with the big boys. Hopefully experience and another year in the weight room will lead to improvement. They were young, so no reason to think they can't get better.

I saw a lot of improvement pass blocking this year than the past 4 seasons. Run blocking was mediocre. I'd be down to try another OL coach. I honestly think JC was the only reason we turned it around this season.

Hate to say it but Ty Chandler is merely an average RB. Great straight line speed, but does not break a lot of tackles, and is not nearly as shifty as Gray. No doubt Chandler has elite top end speed, but I think Gray probably has more burst and quicker acceleration ala Kamara. Chandler May be better suited as a slot WR than pure RB...catching the ball, and running the occasional end around.

Now we need a bigger power RB to compliment Gray. Or is that person possibly already on the team playing LB??? Crouch may be needed on defense more but... Hmmm??
Banks(If back) , Whitehead and Hodges. I do not see any reason the freshman should not be able to contribute immediately. Plus Smalls may make an impact. I think they all may help more than Chandler and Jordan.

I'm very skeptical of PFF's methodologies. People seem to have polarized views of analytics. Some people think it's hocus pocus, while others tend to put a lot of stock in them.

As someone who works in machine learning, who knows how this stuff works, I tend to be more in the middle. There are good analytics and bad analytics. Some of PFF's analytics seem suspect to me. We don't know their methodology, so it's impossible to evaluate, but a lot of the stuff they are evaluating is inherently difficult to evaluate with analytics., which makes me think it could be a very junky model.

"Garbage in, garbage out," as the saying goes.

I'm not saying PFF is wrong. All I'm saying is ... I wouldn't necessarily put more stock in them than I would in a company like Rivals or 247. And we know Rivals and 247 outright make stuff up sometimes. A lot of PFF's stuff doesn't pass the smell test IMO.

JMO but I'd like to see us cut back on so much RB rotation....Good backs tend to get better as the game goes on and they get into the flow/speed of the game. Pruitt and staff seem to rotate RB's as much as Butch and staff did with WR's. Also would like to see Chaney get the backs more involved in the passing game....Helton used Chandler quite a bit more in the passing game than Chaney did this season and Chandler can be pretty effective out in space when he gets the ball.

We had 2 freshmen and BK was getting back on the horse. I would love to see if they improved over the course of the season.

Take any of the olines from the lesser conferences that ranked ahead of us and do a full swap. You think they would still rank as high against our schedule? I hope not.

The proof is in the pudding. Our offensive numbers across the board were atrocious. We couldn't pass effectively and averaged less than 4 ypc. We couldn't score and especially couldn't score in the red zone. The OL framework for everything the offense hopes to accomplish, so it's not surprising that our 100ish ranked offense had a 100ish ranked OL.

They won 7 of out 8, had a couple huge passing game and gavr Grey a FR rushing record.

Let's worry about the next step next year.

Ty was very active in the passing game during the gator bowl. A lot of posters on here seem to just spew things without taking circumstances into account. One such instance is judging JJ Peterson negatively, and not knowing the circumstances. Since 'Bama game at least, CJP has been saying almost every week that Ty is hobbled by an ankle injury. Add to that the youth and inexperience of our Oline, then add in the fact that our opponent's defenses are playing close to LOS, (load the box), in order to force us to pass because most feel JG is an erratic passer. When and if we ever get a QB who has a quick release and is accurate all these defenses we've been facing that have been cheating up are going to be forced to respect our passing game and that should open up our running game. Almost everyone who post on VN feels that JG is the main cause of our offensive woes. He's been with these receivers at least 3 years. No one can tell me that you can't get the timing down in that amount of time. He should be throwing the ball prior to the receiver making his last cut,......not waiting. The Oline will be much improved next year. Our backs will be stronger. It all centers around the QB,imo. That's the weakness all our opponents key on. Pretty simple really.

Categorization is not a good thing. One day you'll learn.
Neither is having a joke fly over your head. Just saying that dismissing all analytics nowadays is like not doing film study.

prefer eye test and from the beginning of the year to the bowl game, we went from "very bad to much better"...industrial jargon...:D

GO BIG ORANGE!

Pass pro was definitely better coupled with, if you can believe it, a little better job by the QBs. Run blocking went from awful to ok at times but mostly poor.

I saw great blocking that one time at Alabama...I could have walked into the endzone behind that mighty block. JG chose a different path...
