Post game randoms…..

  • I would be remiss if I did not start out by stating how sincerely I love (no homo) and am endeared to this group of seniors. Throw Trey Smith in there too because he's likely gone as well. I could ramble on about how special each of these kids are but we all already know. I will always root for each and every one of them from this day forth.
  • Jarrett Guarantano... I literally don't know what I want here. He, also has endeared himself to me. Say what you want - and a lot of it is probably justified (although some of it is over the top) - but reality is we do not get to a bowl game without JG. We don't win most of those late games without him. I personally still think its a case of having four different OC's in your head your first four years. Because the arm talent is there, but its the mental part of it. There is a part of me that would not shed a tear if he transferred. But if I'm being honest there is an even bigger part of me that hopes he comes back and battles Harrison Bailey for the job. Because he's shown this year, even if he isn't the man or gets benched, et cetera, he is a consummate team player. We all thought he was transferring out after Alabama - but he stuck with us and we needed him. Yes, I'm still a JG fan.
  • Now, Brian Mauer.... fan favorite, but lets be honest.... he's just not a very good QB right now. At least two of his passes should've been intercepted against a non-ball hawking secondary last night, in his only drive. Now, that isn't necessarily his fault - freshman QB coming from a gimmicky offense in high school. But he's got confidence and ego and moxie. Unfortunately for us, I could see him transferring out just as much as Shrout, should HB come in and play as good as expected.
  • I thought it all week and I'm pretty sure I posted it somewhere, but I had a feeling we'd target Keyton deep at least once and that we'd get Crouch a chance at a touchdown. As much as last night was about the seniors, I also felt we would try and emphasize the young kids playing to help with recruiting. Plus, on top of that, the young kids are just that good.
  • Ramel Keyton is going to be good. We knew that when we recruited him, but I think he could bust out. That catch with two defenders draped all over him was impressive. Really like this kids potential.
  • Hats off to Shamburger last night. IIRC his issues in the past have been work ethic and/or maturity. Has a light switch flipped for him? Could you imagine what a boost to our secondary if he was bought in and brought what he brought last night into every week? He'd find his way into the NFL. Definitely going to be one of the more intriguing seniors heading into next season.
  • Another rising senior that I think is on the cusp is Josh Palmer. He was a main stay last night and I want to say he had 8 receptions. Definitely going to ease the loss of MC and JJ.
  • Oh, one last thing about JJ...my biggest 'regret' about last night was not getting him to the 1k yard mark.
  • Kivon Bennett - Young man just keeps getting better. Hes kind of a tweener physically - doesn't have the length you'd expect from a prototypical pass rusher, but he keeps finding ways to make his presence felt. He might never be an all-sec player, but he's the kind of kid you need on a team, has a role, knows his role, and gives it his everything. Also, love we turned that Alabama family into Vols fans. Helped wisen them up.
  • A little known player on the roster you all might not know about, but who I think will be very good - Eric Gray. He wears number 3 and plays running back. My bold prediction and you can bookmark this if you want, hes going to be a star.
  • I don't want to bang on the kid, but Bryce Thompson needs to get a grip sometimes. Runs his mouth a lot and tries to knock everyone out when he ought to be wrapping up. For as good as he was as a freshman, I could see some of these young guys cutting into his playing time if he doesn't start playing fundamental football.
  • Brett Cimaglia - doesn't always get the credit he deserves. But he was money last night, again.
  • Finally.... I'm bittersweet about this season ending. This was a special year. It's going to be one we all look back on and remember. It's going to mean something. Jeremy Pruitt was being honest when he said the next decade was ours. And we will look back on this season as a catalyst. Sure, 2019 was anchored by the play of seniors, but a lot of freshman and sophmores got a lot of playing time and they learned how to win. Learned were never out of it. Learned to close games. Valuable lessons going forward. I'm excited about this offseason - who else we sign, what transfers we have (incoming and outgoing), assistant coach movement, etc. I am going to enjoy all of it leading to the 2020 season.

Team ended up with 4 sacks, DT had 1.5.

Gray finished his freshman campaign with 539 and 5.3 YPC...better than Banks 😏

I think Gray could be special here, would love to have him 3 more years. Hoping Crouch becomes a beast, wherever he plays. He definitely seems comfortable at RB & runs hard.
