The Official Tennessee vs. Wisconsin Game Thread, 1:30 PM ET, CBS

There were a lot more factors involved. Even success has to be factored in. Losing Bone and williams early was due to Barnes' success. i would however think that a guy with 30 years experience shouldn't be in this position year 5 and it doesn't help that Bruce went to a final 4 in year 5 and we're starting over.

Pearl didn’t go to the NCAAT until year 4. If Barnes did that, fans would have been pissed.

Starting over would mean what it was when he got here, 2 years of no tourney at all, I don’t think that’s going to be the case...I would expect us to be pretty good next season.
Barnes' history complicates the situation. We or many of us expected a down year to be at least an appearance in the NCAAT. Being on the verge of a possible losing season is hard to accept with the Barnes' reputation and many of his criticisms are justified. Guess he hadn't factored in the UT CURSE.

This is false and shows you have zero idea how recruiting works, especially when it comes to the elite basketball world. Similar to Zo being here then bolting for Cal and immediately snagging 5 stars, while everyone here complains "I guess he was just lazy here, why didn't he do that here" etc. One thing that got reported was a booster refused to allow him to use a plane to go and recruit. You think that's the only thing that got cut?

You want to fish in the big pond? You better have booster support. Barnes didn't have the support he currently has on day 1 here. Barnes proved himself still hungry and now he has a much healthier recruiting budget to go and get the elite.
So you’re saying we’re pushing the envelope a little more now In recruiting?

I don’t know what you mean by pushing the envelope. But what he is saying is that Barnes wasn’t getting the support that he is getting now, which has been speculation as to why Barnes actually entertained UCLA.

So what is “ different” in the support Barnes is getting today for recruiting that he didn’t have 3 years ago?

I am just telling you what the speculation was and maybe even publicly stated. But he wasn’t recruiting 5 stars back then. If you are ok with him developing lower rated players, then this year was going to be normal after the departures, just like development in Barnes’ second year.

Barnes and staff apparently left right after the Memphis game to watch Kennedy Chandler play. That takes coordination and support from boosters and their planes. If the boosters don’t want to do that full time, then Barnes can’t do it.

I would never know what it takes to recruit at a high level program, but it’s apparent it takes coordination by many people. Some fans just act like coaches can do what they want.

If he continues to sign 4 and 5 * players, I’ll buy into what you’re saying. I just hope our future 5* players are a little more like Tobias Harris than JJJ

IMO, Jalen hasn't been given an opportunity. He played well yesterday!
So you don't think there is a reason he has freshman playing in front of him? Admit he played somewhat better than he has, but in his previous minutes he did very little. No rebounding, effort on defense, passing up shots or taking bad ones. Minutes are usually won in practice. If he out performed Gaines in practice he'd have gotten the nod to start yesterday. 4 years in, you should be the man compared to a freshman. He aint.

People wouldn’t be upset about JJJ if he was on last years team
I’m not at all “ upset”. Its disappointing when we sign a supposed 5* and they turn out to be a 3* player. He’s not as talented as Grant Williams or even Bone were their freshmen years. Hopefully Barnes and Co. can work their magic and make a player out of him before he graduates.

Agree with what you are saying, however, he was our “ best” offensive player vs. Wisconsin and it wasn’t even close. Wonder how many points he might have scored had he played 25 minutes? I think he is our best outside shooter. Can’t win games with defense only, you gotta score some points.

His stats are pretty similar to Bone's freshman year. Bone's assist/turnover stats were better, but James is a much better rebounder.

Bone also had more to distribute too.

Someone posted stats for a few of the other 5 stars from the class, JJJ’s were better than quite a few.

He played 22+ minutes and I didn't see much perimeter defense from anyone.

Lol. Look up Bone’s stats his first two years and get back to us. Bone was injured his first year and very inconsistent. Averaged almost identical number of assists, and Bone actually played PG. No one does their homework anymore.

Anyone else hear the high pitched howling by the Wisconsin bench while Pons shot free throws? Did someone let a coyote in the gym? (Not an excuse for going 0 for 2 of course)

I registered here just to let you know that that scream you heard during TN free throws was coming from D'Mitrick Trice's mom. When his brother, Travis, played for Michigan State, we Badger fans complained about the same thing when the Spartans came to Madison. He's just a junior, so we've got another season of this...

It’s harmless, but I’m surprised no one (either official or even from Wisconsin) has asked her to stop. I didn’t get a chance to watch much of the game, but it was annoying.

Not saying JJJ is the ONLY 5* that is overrated, but nobody can argue he shouldn't have been a 5*. Not his fault, I know. He’s average at best. At least we’ll have him around for 4 years

Wasn't Bone a 3 star?
