Jimi Hendrix was a guitarist in backup bands for several other more established rhythm & blues musicians in the '60s before (ex-Animals member) Chas Chandler 'discovered' him in '66; Ike & Tina Turner, Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, Curtis Knight, etc. Interestingly, Hendrix' first actual tv appearance was in Nashville in 1965 while with a member of Little Richard's band. Hendrix lived here for a couple of years after leaving the army where he was stationed at Ft. Campbell.

It didn't look like he got poked; more like he got swiped from the side. It may have startled him, but as you said, doesn't explain his NBA level flop.
