All Thangs Pussum and Chad Thread

Has anybody tried the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer? I know that @vollygirl posted at one point about an instant pot, but good luck searching here on that ("pot" is too short and "instant" seems to be in every post...)

I seem to have worked the 10-year-old slow cooker to near-death (I don't trust the temp settings any more) and am looking for a replacement. I didn't really want an Instant Pot (I mainly want something that will sear and then cook), but it's starting to look like an Instant Pot would be cheaper than the few slow cookers with sear capability.

And then I found an Instant Pot that also can air fry. It's expensive as heck, but we have so many rewards on Amazon that it would only be $90 or so.

Any thoughts/ ideas? I'm definitely interested in air frying, but I do not want umpty-billion gadgets on my counters, assuming that I ever have counters. I don't think I want a counter-top oven/ air fryer combo.

I have a Bella pressure cooker that does similar stuff to the insta pot.

Can't wait to hear your opinion if you get one!

Have you got an air fryer too? At some point, they were being discussed on this thread (I think). I had never heard of such a critter, but the more I read, the more intrigued I get.

Aha, searched on air fryer, which only looks for "fryer", and there was a discussion on the Recruiting forum. Well, of course.

That must be what I remember!

I signed up for CamelCamelCamel to get alerted for price changes on the Duo Crisp thingy. I'm attracted by the idea of one gadget doing two (in general) things, although sometimes it means that it does neither very well. But I'm determined to have minimal stuff on the counters. Everything possible goes in drawers!

Don’t want too much stuff in your drawers.

90% of the reason behind this endless remodel is getting counter space. I'll have more than twice what I had before, but I want it empty except when I'm using it. Nearly all the base cabinets are (deep) three-drawer cabs, and I'll have a wall-hung pot rack again plus a smaller rack to hang utensils and olive oil, etc.

My ADHD or whatever it is makes part of me want to have everything visible (I don't do well with lower cabs with doors and shelves), but at the same time, clutter stresses me out and makes me more disorganized, and things go from 0 to chaos if I don't have a home for everything and ruthlessly put things back.

Cabinet installation begins tomorrow, lasting until late Wednesday or Thursday (the cabinetmaker is doing the install), and I'll probably start filling them up before his van leaves the driveway!

Here's what we have now in what's supposed to be a dining room, and let's just say that my brain is not handling it well (note the family first-aid station next to the fridge, haha):

I go back and forth between form and function. Neither are great. But it is what it is.

I'm not familiar with soapstone as a countertop. Does it require maintenance like granite?
Zero.

It doesn't stain, it doesn't absorb, it's hard to crack (heat). It's sanitary, because it doesn't absorb juices (to use the polite term) from food. It feels soft (lots of talc), but if a scratch bothers you, you can sand it out. They have greenish, grey, and/or white veins.

If you want, you can oil it with food-grade mineral oil. Soapstone starts out as a pale grey, but it oxidizes with time to a charcoal, almost black. Applying mineral oil once a month or so speeds that up, but you don't have to do it unless you want to see the color change. Soapstone doesn't have to be sealed, resealed, etc. Back in the day, it was used in chemistry labs, including high-school chemistry classes. If I couldn't hurt it back in 10th grade chemistry, it must be pretty tough! I love them. There's something about them, with their depth, and you just want to touch them.

This was from our previous house, freshly oiled lol. They were either leathered or honed, I can't remember:

Did not know that. Granite, tho it looks good, has to be a pain with all the maintenance responsibility that comes with it and we want low maintenance.

Corian, Quartz, and now soapstone is on the radar.
