The Official Tennessee vs. Murray State Game Thread, 9:00 PM ET, SEC Network

Missing the inside game from LY. And a bevy of leaders who could carry the entire team on his shoulders when required.
Yeah even last year there were some games we looked a little shaky and had to rely on it. We’ll lose those games this year. Turner and Bowden need to step up in their new roles. Need to get some plays set up for them.

This is a good game for us. Murray State, with out without Ja Morant is a good, NCAA tourney team. It was never going to be easy for us to transition into this season. Those expecting our freshman to be all-Americans from the start are delusional. Still, there is plenty of positives. Seeing a nice step up in play from both Pons and Fulky. Once we get things flowing by SEC play, I have confidence we can compete for a top 4 spot.

Seems like most of our 5 star guys take about 3 years to turn into solid college players.. not trying to be a downer but outside of maybe Tobias I can’t think of any 5 stars that came here and made an immediate impact.. of course I’m kind of young so only been watching about 15 years so I’m sure there were some before then.
Bernard King scored 43 points in his first game as a Vol, Allan Houston averaged 20 points,

If this team doesn’t gel......quick the Washington game could be real......real ugly.

Who is to say Murray State isn't a deserving top 25 team? They are trying to prove they are a good team even without Ja, which I think they are.

5 star is supposed to be equivalent to a lottery pick type player. He’s just another guy....at best. Major disappointment since he literally can’t score.

No it’s not. There are approximately 25-30 five stars per year, and about 20 of them aren’t immediate lottery picks. Just aren’t. Some aren’t lottery picks at all, and some take a couple of years. I would prefer him develop and play another year. It’s how you develop a great team- great talent that stays at least 2 years.

If Barnes somehow gets this group yo 20 wins and a tourney appearance, he’ll be a miracle worker. Murray State is by far the better, more confident, more talented team. It ain’t close.
My guess is that at least 2 of our youngsters will be much improved by mid season and will be integral parts of us winning our fair share of games. The defense will come along, most of these kids have never played defense with the intensity that Barnes demands and IMO, they’ll figure it out. I don’t expect much out of this team, other than fight, being competitive and improvement by years end. Anyone expecting anything more is gonna be highly disappointed.
GBO!!

I've been really negative in here tonight so I'm going to try and focus on some more positive aspects. Like the fact that so far #20 Washington, who we play this weekend, is struggling with Mt. Saint Mary's, a far inferior team to Murray State. Or the fact #22 Auburn had to make a shot in the final seconds to beat Southern Alabama.

One thing that Hasn’t been talked about much, but is becoming more and more apparent is the new roll Lamonte is playing. He’s been a backup PG his entire career, but it’s asking a lot to be the primary ball handler and one of the 2 primary scorers. I know he’s a senior, but that’s a big role that he hasn’t quite figured out yet. Need to win these types of games while trying to get everyone comfortable I their role by league play to have success this year.

Barnes also experimented in 1st half with Fulk and Bowden out. He will not play 11 guys all year. He is trying to find his best 8 for the rotation.
Gaines was just lost tonight and Kent will not be in regular rotation unless we just get in serious foul trouble. I was surprised Pember played

Come on man....stop blaming the refs for this. That's just pathetic. We're losing because Murray has completely outplayed us so far.
They have definitely outplayed us. It's a 4 point game at half though if called evenly. Life isn't black and white.

I didn’t say they weren’t, however right now Washington is probably a better team.......and the first “power” team Tennessee will face.

I think the biggest things I've seen is:
1) UT doesn't have an inside presence with Fulkerson out.
2) As tall as Kent is he appears to be a true defensive liability. He doesn't even fill space.
3) We have got to get more out of Turner and James.
4) Lamonte doesn't appear as effective on offense when he is the primary ball handler.
5) Pons has improved his shot a lot.
6) Murray State is just shooting the ball well and is playing aggressive.
Good observations and good post!
GBO!!

Look at Kentucky, not everyone is an immediate all-star and some of those 5 stars sit the bench and never turn into anything, sitting behind freshman class after freshman class. I trust Barnes to get the most out of his players and for them to be light years ahead by SEC play.

Don’t forget the Kentucky loss to Evansville...

Tennessee’s O is ugly, but is efficient. Turner and Fulky have to step up.they also have to get WAY more aggressive on the boards.

Need more hustle
