October 30, 1993.......

On the second play of the game, Charlie Garner set the stage with a 60 yrd TD run. He would finish with 105 yrds rushing and “Little Man” Stewart had 114 yrds and 2TDs in the Vols 55-3 victory. Todd Helton threw his first two career TDs in a reserve roll to Nilo Silvan and John Sartelle. The defense had 7 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. John Emery had 2 fumble recoveries.

It took 6 games, but Tennessee finally had points scored against them. Duke recorded a safety, as the Vols won 25-2. Gene McEver scored 2 TDs and Beattie Feathers returned an interception 62 yrds for a touchdown. The vaunted Vol defense stopped Duke inside the 5yrd line on two occasions.

November 1, 1969.......

A disaster of a first quarter caused the Vols to trail #11 Georgia early on a rainy day in Athens. The second quarter saw Curt Watson take charge and lead the Vols to a 14-3 lead at halftime. George Hunt’s 38 yrd field goal in the 2nd half gave the Vols a 17-3 victory. Curt Watson set a UT record with 197 yrds on 19 carries (15 broken tackles and a TD).

November 2, 1946........

Legendary player Charlie Choo Choo Justice and North Carolina visited Knoxville as the #9 ranked team. Justice had a great game, but it was Walter Slater that stole the show for the Vols. Late in the game, Slater fielded a punt, raced down the sideline, and had one man to beat. He faked a lateral, and sent the Tar Heel spinning. As Slater raced 79 yrds to the end zone, he turned back and laughed at the Tar Heel. It was Choo Choo Justice. UT would go on to defeat UNC 20-14.

I remember this, listening to John Ward that day. Georgia had no answer for Curt Watson, who was an absolute beast. I did not realize that he broke 15 tackles, although I knew it was a lot.

November 3, 2001.......

The “Ice Man” does it again @ Notre Dame. Casey Clausen was fantastic on the road as UT’s quarterback (14-1). Clausen was 17-29 for 228 yrds and a TD to Donte Stallworth. Clausen also rushed for a TD that put the game out of reach with less than a minute left. Julian Battle had a forced fumble and returned a fumble 81 yrds for a Touchdown in the Vols 28-18 victory.

My sister, her daughter and I drove from Tustin/City Of Orange to El Toro in (I think) 1982 to see the Blue Angels. Scanning the "line-up" of those magnificent pilots, I noticed the name, "Curt Watson." I couldn't pick a single, all-time favorite Tennessee Football Vol; but, I could hardly place anyone above Curt Watson.

Bill Emendorfer was named AP Southeast Lineman of the Week as Haskel Stanback and Bill Rudder combined for 174 yrds rushing. Condredge Holloway threw for two touchdowns in the Vols 14-0 victory.

The defense posted their first shutout since 1963 as Art Reynolds and Conrad Graham ended Bulldog drives with interceptions.

November 5, 1977.......

Memphis State came to Knoxville for Homecoming in Majors’ first season. A steady rain didn’t deter the Vols, as they amassed 423 yrds of offense. Jimmy Streater passed for 140 yrds and ran for 2 TDs. Chip Linebarier and Clark Duncan were forced into starting roles in the secondary due to injuries. Each made big plays, as Chip had an interception and Clark blocked a FG, in the 27-24 victory. Kelsey Finch added 106 yrds rushing and a TD.

On November 5th 1955 Tennessee and Georgia Tech played to a 7-7 tie at Shields Watkins Field. Tennessee finished 1955 with a 6-3-1 record while Georgia Tech finished 1955 with a 9-1-1 record.

I didn't like them when I first saw them (to be fair, I was only 7), but they have grown on me over the years. It would be neat to see them brought back for a Homecoming or neutral site game (like in 2004).

November 6, 1965.......

The largest crowd to ever see a football game in the State of Tennessee (52,174) saw the Vols play Georgia Tech. After a scoreless first half, the Vols erupted with 3TDs in the third quarter.
Harold Stancell intercepted a Kim King pass and returned it 36 yrds for a touchdown for the first score. Charlie Fulton ran for 133 yrds and passed for 103 yrds in the Vols 21-7 victory.

I thought they wore them for most road games from 1971-1973. I seem to remember a photo from the '74 game at Auburn with the Vols in stormtrooper unis.

On November 6th 1948 Tennessee beat #6 Georgia Tech 13-6 at Grant Field in Atlanta. General Neyland told the Vols in the locker room after the game " I love every one of you damn hard fighting wildcats!". Georgia Tech had beaten Tennessee 27-0 at Grant Field in 1947 and General Neyland wanted revenge. Tennessee finished 1948 4-4-2 and Georgia Tech finished 7-3.
