Windy's football discussion thread.

I am feeling for my beloved NorCal. Devastating fires popping up everywhere and conditions are not improving. Entire towns are being evacuated.

90 mph gusts recorded in Napa County and 102 mph gusts in Sonoma County. They are still reeling from the Tubbs Fire two years ago. I hope it settles down and is not as bad as it was then, but it is looking pretty bleak right now.
DSD (dear stepdaughters) 1 and 2 and their mom (DH’s ex) just got here today for Halloween week, and they say it’s awful, even where they live (Castro Valley and Livermore.) PG&E cut power to everything, including traffic lights. Part of I-80 is shut down, imagine what that’s like for evacuees at 3 am. The latest fire was DUE TO (not despite) PG&E shutting down - transformer blew or something. The wind just shifted yesterday or today, bringing the smoke to East Bay.

This is one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been, and it’s being destroyed, along with the lives of those who live there and call it home.

not watching live --- turn in your orange
Even though you are unerringly a petty swinging Richard towards me, I don't dislike you, Mikey. When something happens in your life to keep you from watching a game live, remember your Nancy post.

The "True Fan" thing passed by me until I read volly's thread, Slice. It's as if a cadre of folks feel the need to call out others who don't adhere to their unyielding belligerence - "Your celebrating being a Vol fan is just a masked attack on me!" I gather "True Fan" is a sneer at those who still embody the qualities for which Vols fans were once renowned.

When I think of true Vols fans, I think of
  • The two older gents who payed for my friend's sister's concession purchase because she cheered for the Vols.
  • The Big Orange fan in Oregon who, when hit in the face by a thrown hot dog, calmly remarked, Oh, is this for me? and proceeded to disarm and charm the local Ducks fans.
  • The fellas dressed in orange who were splattered with dirt thrown by the spinning tires of the Bama fans' station wagon which they help push back onto the road from the soft shoulder were it had been stuck.
  • The Tennessee fans who bought drinks for Miami fans in New Orleans, both before and after the 1986 Sugar Bowl.
  • The young tailgaters who, seeing this old alum walking about with an empty cup pulled me into their canopy tent and poured me Tennessee whiskey on the rocks.
I think of their good nature, their generosity, their unfailing support for their Vols whatever happens. I am a true fan and pity those who sneer at me for being so.

The legions of the miserable just don’t like when you point out their misery

I just like messing with them, ;). I've laid my bait out over there, just waiting for the usual suspects (a couple already have taken it), lol.
I don't like them attacking her, I'll jump in every time, even though she can handle herself.

Is the poster Billy Ratliff -- the actual one that recovered the Stoerner fumble in 98 ? I know he has been doing a show on Youtube this season

I think some misconstrued her intent. There's a difference between "boycotting" a game and just not going for legitimate reasons, and I think some thought she was calling out everyone who didn't go. People have a tendency to get offended because they forget to use common sense.

I'm telling you brother, there are a few that sacrifice all just to be right. Being right is everything and tgey get sloppy when it starts looking like they wroooooong. One is waiting for my reply as we speak.

Yep, listened to many a game painted out of my radio by the great John Ward.
In Fall 1974, I attended a number of games in the company of a guy from Memphis. He always brought a portable radio with him and tuned in John Ward. He was polite and would turn it down if folks nearby asked him to do so. I urged him to crank it up! After all, nobody could hear anything over the roar of the crowd, and when they weren't roaring, well, it was John Ward!

Years ago I saw my new neighbor in his front yard and went over to introduce myself. Our conversation turned to football and it turned out he was from Buffalo and played at Canisius. I was telling him about John Ward saying It’s football time in Tennessee when the team runs through the T and it always gave me goosebumps. He looked at my arms and said you got goosebumps right now just thinking about it. Sure enough I looked down and I did have goosebumps.

Listening to JW, you never felt like you missed much. In some ways it was better. But Kesling isn't half the announcer John Ward was. I remember Mr. Ward came to band practice once and talked with us. Seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

The truth is, I think some people just want to be offended, so they jump on whatever they can with little actual thought put forth.
And I think that there are a lot who make some dramatic statement and then can't figure how to back away from it. It's as if they nurse a grudge against something or other so strongly that they'd rather hang onto it, convinced that they are in the right, than let go and (omg) enjoy life. Stuck in their self-imposed grumpy misery.
