Idc if we win by 1 or 100. I just want to beat Muschamp and watch him cry.
SC is like that little cousin that you always whooped and then grew 2 in taller then you over summer and beat you in basketball a couple of games, but then you turn it on and whoop his azz.

Excellent post, Nick.

Tennessee will need to have a Bama game like effort to neutralize the SC rush and seek to establish the running game....
This.

This is going to be a war. We are talking about a team that beat Georgia and beat Florida (before the SEC refs intervened).

Them orange britches win it.

so hard to pick this game w/our qb issues.

i like that our O line is settling down and playing better.

i like that our defensive front is playing on the other side of the LOS more now...a lot more now actually.

i agree with @nicksjuzunk about the WR's. they have to have a big game. no more deflections for int's, no drops. go get the dang ball....there will be opportunities for them.....

this game will likely come down to the running game for both teams.

i'll take us in a close one at home....but this game is gonna be tough. i think there's a lot of similarities between the two, and i don't know that we can waste opportunities against them and still win...(we got away with leaving at least 6 points on the field against MSU, we did not get away with leaving points out there against Bama or BYU)....so if you get a chance to make a play...MAKE IT. this team is better than MSU...imo.

and avoid the catastrophe. mistakes will happen. but just avoid the catostrophic mistake that changes the game. BYU, GSU, Bama, FL...we had catastrophic errors in all those games....eliminate those, and we give ourselves a chance.

no matter who the QB is, the O line, RB's, TE's, WR's...gonna have to make plays for the QB.

TN 17
USCe 13
probably a fairly ugly game all in all. but get a W any way you can.

With Shrout:
20-14 Tennessee

With JG
9-7 Tennessee

With Maurer
42-10 Tennessee
Yeah I think we win this week no matter the QB. Also agree it's a closer game with JG than the BM. Not sure about between JG and JTS. Haven't seen enough of him yet.

We are playing better but depth gets us again unless we can win the turnover battle by 2. USC beat Georgia but was plus 4 TO’s so not that good but beat them and had Florida beat who manhandled is. Games are not transitive but this USC team did play better than we did against two top 10 teams. We need Maurer and some breaks. Close game regardless due to improved defense.

Win the turnover battle by two then we win 24-20. Play even in the turnover department then we lose 20-14. Go minus 2 in turnovers then lose 30-14.

Emotionally spent USCe play uninspired . Hungry Vols by a bunch.

38-17 Vols
This is the key factor IMO...can SC get up for a 3rd weekend in a row on the road? Emotional win against GA; emotional loss that maybe they felt should be a win against Florida. Our guys have turned the corner IMO. I think we take the edge and physicality we have found the last 2 weeks, as well as we bring a chip on our shoulder from the Bama game, as I think our guys are beyond ticked off that they were shafted so blatantly by the refs, and we dominate them from the opening kickoff. It’s calling for rain which is another factor. This defense is playing the run very well. This game sets up with the weather for who can run the ball the best. I think our OL takes another step forward with a set 5 now and mauls SC in the trenches. We rush for 200+ and hold SC to less than 150.

VOLS win by 10+, and continue our movement to:

Tennessee returns from Alabama with another loss in the column, but feeling a lot better about the future after a hard fought loss to the Crimson Tide. The bad news is the Vols are sitting at 2-5. The good news, is Tennessee fans have not felt better about their team since about 10 seconds into the Georgia State game. Every game left on the schedule is a winnable game. They almost certainly will not win every game, but they have a reasonable chance to win any of them.

Keys to Victory:

1. QB or not QB... that is the question: For the second week in a row, Brian Maurer has sustained a head/neck injury that leaves his availability in doubt for the following game. No one really knows what is going on... whether it is truly a concussion, a neck strain, or something else. Because of this, we have no idea whether or not he is going to be available on Saturday. It's not a stretch to say the game hinges very much on whether Maurer is good to go (and finish) the game because we know what JG gives us and Shrout still has not gained the trust of the coaching staff. Don't expect an answer to this question till Saturday, as Pruitt will not show his cards until necessary.

2. OL Physicality: The Tennessee OL has really begun to come into it's own, though Darnell had a really rough night against Bama. South Carolina has beef on their DL, with Javon Kinlaw and LB DJ Wonnum being the stars of the defense. On the back-end, they have a talented secondary which creates all kinds of problems for opposing quarterbacks. Jake Fromm had an awful day as SC upset Georgia and Kyle Trask had a fair day, but the SC defense kept them in the game until late when the rug came out from under them.

Tennessee will need to have a Bama game like effort to neutralize the SC rush and seek to establish the running game in the likely absence of Brian Maurer.

3. TN WR Play: Will Muschamp is 100% aware that Chaney has no faith in JG to throw the ball downfield. This is concerning. He will have his corners sit all over the WR's in the short passing game and force TN to take chances downfield. If they are not able to beat the press coverage, it's going to be a long day. Israel Mukaumu had three INT's against UGA and returned one for a TD. Former Vol commitment Jaycee Horn is a star in the making. The TN WR corp needs to strap it on and be ready to carry some wood.

4. Feaster Famine: Former Clemson RB Tavien Feaster is finally realizing the potential that made him a highly recruited running back years ago. He is averaging 6 YPC on the year and blew Florida up for 175 yards at 7 YPC. Tennessee needs to see Feaster kept in check. QB Ryan Hillinski has been ok, but not stellar. In fact... outside of a bizarre 324 yard passing game against Bama... of all teams, he hasn't topped 200 yards in games against KY, Mizzou, UGA, or Florida. If Tennessee can eliminate turnovers and generate some offense, the next concern is Feaster.

Prediction: Without knowing the status of Brian Maurer, this becomes such a difficult call because it is literally a difference of 14 points on the field, IMO. A 14 point spread is easily the difference between these teams, so that being said...

You really think Maurer is worth 17 points? Even when Brady sits out the lines don't adjust that much.

I honestly think our defense will keep them very much in check. The deciding factor is going to be our passing game. If we can't throw the ball, then obviously they'll key in on the running game. If that happens, the defense will wear down and we'll probably lose by 7 to 10. If we can move it well with whoever is in at QB, we can likely win by one or two scores with our running game.

if there's one thing that does have me a little excited or hopeful, or both, is that our DL has been getting in to opponents backfields and getting TFL's....

i would hope to be able to expect that to continue...keep putting USCe in as many 2nd and 3rd and longs as possible and keep them off schedule, really helps.

i'm not scared of anyone left on our schedule. i'm really not.

the only thing giving me pause is our qb situation. which is a big deal....but everywhere else, we'll hold our own just fine against the remaining competition. i truly believe that.

if he doesn't turn it over...yeah. he can be. he had 14 taken off the board against MSU. we had at least 10 taken off the board against BYU. at least 10 taken off the board against UF. and at least 7 against Bama.

that's a lot of points off hte board just because of turnovers....not all were maurer obviously, but if our offense would stop turning it over we probably blow out BYU and MSU, and make UF and Bama more of a game.

Sourh Carolina has been playing better the last couple of weeks because they’ve been able to run the football (173 vs UGA, 217 vs. FL). I think Pruitt and the D make a concerted effort to stop the run. We’ve been pretty successful when we’ve been able to make the other team one dimensional, and Hilinski is still a freshman so I’d expect him to make some mistakes. The problem is the exact same things can be said about our offense.

I expect the first team to 20 will win, just not sure who that will be.
