'20 TN OLB Tamarion McDonald (UT SIGNEE)

THREE-STAR LB/DB TAMARION MCDONALD
THE ODDS: GOOD — The Memphis, Tenn., native has been committed to Mississippi State since late May, but Tennessee extended an offer to him less than two weeks ago after coach Jeremy Pruitt attended one of his Whitehaven High School team's games. Arkansas also extended an offer to him on Monday. A possible nickel or linebacker, McDonald is coming off an official visit to Tennessee last weekend.

To give a comparison Jalen Reeves-Maybin was recruited to play Star. Mark Barron from Bama is who Pruitt compared him to (in terms of how they will have him play).

Barron played Safety in college though, right? I think what the coaches are selling to McDonald is more of a Rover type LB that can cover up TEs/RBs in SUB packages while also being able to stop run and blitz. They are typically more slight in size and stature than a typical LB and can play in space.

Seems to be one of the trends that the NFL teams are adding to their roster.

i think most defenses are trying to walk that line at a couple spots...DE/OLB...having a guy that can put his hand in the dirt and be a rush end, then next play be stand up backer. that also changes, a little, not a tone, how you look at your DT's/NG as well.

the Star-OLB/SafetyCB....needs to be good enough in runn support, good enough to cover a RB/TE, and when called upon, able to cover a WR if need be....

defenses are trying to be as multiple as they can be because offenses just dictate so much thru their personnel packages, that finding mismatches just got too easy.....plus with the way you have to sub players in and out now, you can and will get caught with the same personnel grouping on the field for multiple plays at a time. so you need as much versatility on the field as you can get.

and the football iq has to be there to do it as well. responsibilities changing play to play, communications, assignments etc....

when you get all 11 of those guys on the same page, those kinds of defenses can be really awesome.
