Will Barnes Surprise Us?

There’s system time and game time within that system. Till we see what the front court does against good competition(which as you know we won’t have to wait long to see) defense is a valid concern... especially in the paint
Very true but 5 of the 6 have been under fire in good competition.

Swear I’m not trying to call you out but who are the 6 your counting?

I’ve got Kent, ORN, Fulk, Uros, Pember and Pons.. 4 of those haven’t sent real comp yet

My 6 returning guys who have been with Barnes 3-4 years. Turner, bowden, Fulky, Johnson, kent, Pons. The only one without meaningful minutes is Kent. Barnes history at Texas even after losing multiple starters ,out of 17 seasons missed 20 wins twice. I expect he'll continue here by retooling and winning in regular season. A surprise season for me would be if he didn't.

By the way guys and gals, it's ON now, not ORN. Like, damn, ON (Oliver/Flying Finn) was on tonight with 10 points, 8 rebounds, a block and 3 assists.

Miscommunication... I was just speaking front court players and defense.

I saw that 3 PAC 12 teams ranked top 10 in preseason! What? Am shocked that SEC doesn't have 3 teams in top 15! What gives? I think Vols can win 20 plus games this year. How good is Kentucky or Florida? Vols play Kansas; how good are they?

UK and Florida should be top 10 to start.

I said this and someone questioned my basketball IQ...

#Vols’ Lamonte Turner on how the team will adjust without all the big guys lost after last season: It’s gonna be fun, man. We’re gonna play a lot faster. We’re trying to shoot in the first 7 seconds of the shot clock, and we’re shooting more 3s.

No, they were just questioning your overall IQ...:p

Not sure I'd like the "live and die" by 3's approach with Turner. He either shoots lights out or goes into huge multiply game slumps.

The biggest question is honestly the center play. We know Fulky has good moments but he isn’t exactly strong. Uros has not played college basketball yet. Kent the same. Can Fulky stay out of foul trouble and play 25 mpg? Can Uros provide good minutes? Can Kent play defense? And hell we don’t even know Uros is eligible. It’s the biggest question.

Since true centers are no longer the norm, we might be in decent shape in the paint if Fulk is stronger, Kent stays healthy, O(R)N is ready to contribute, Pons can fill in as a 4, and maybe even Pember and/or Jancek are good for a few minutes to rest the regulars. Sure would make a difference if Plavsic gets a green light.

Yes and no about the centers. We don’t need a back to the basket presence for sure, but we need a rim runner, rebounder and shot blocker. And Pember/Jancek/ORN aren’t guys I want playing the center position. They are 4’s.

I was about to say I'd like to see us go small with a lineup of James/Turner/Bowden/Pons/ON throughout stretches and really put the press on teams and speed up the pace.

That lineup could hang a hundred on a few of the November/December opponents. Probably wouldn't cut it in the conference schedule for more than a minute or two.

I hope that Pember plays more 2 than 4. He'd be a huge matchup problem if he's a threat to drain 3s with the ability to post up average sized guards.

I love that we have a diversified roster and have a coach that isn't so stubborn to not adjust the style to the available lineups. We've had a coach that was so hardcore about defense that we'd only score in the 40s, 50s, and 60s regularly. We've had a coach that discounted discipline (on and off the court) and would pretty much just roll the ball out and let them do whatever. We've had a coach married to a mid-major defensive system that loses it's effectiveness versus D-1 level talent. $5mm well spent.

Pember might not even be a 4. His skill-set is much more that of a big 3.

Barnes said on media day he might learn 4 positions. Everything but PG.
Hmmm...seems like a lot to learn for a freshman. I'd prefer he learn the SF position really well in year one, then focus on others once he masters it. But again, I don't get paid to make that decision, so I'll defer to coach.
