Yea but that’s part of the problem especially having a great RB like they do. All it takes is one false step and you can be beat. Big game for our LBs.
agree, but if you play your assignment right, understanding the look they're giving you, then you can defend that.

communication and not over reacting is important. i get it that the play is designed to get you looking somewhere you're not supposed to, but if you have good communication and some IQ at LB, that play can be made.

....to me, that play worked because the LB made the mistake that was intended. all three guys on the right side went inside....all 3!!

bituli and ht are gonna have to do a good job of recognition and communication. and even then, yes, sometimes they'll get it wrong too....just can't have that be the "norm".

Agreed. The DE could have helped everyone buy time by attacking the mesh point instead of charging so far up the field to where he thought the qb was gonna be.

Alternatively, he could have done what every player is taught from grade school -take on the lead blocker. If he had just reacted that way, he would have held up the primary receiver, who he would have read as a blocker pulling around. Instead, he let that h-back slip though unscathed and he was too late pressuring the qb.
yeah, the DE/OLB kinda got stuck in no man's land there lol...and i think he knew it...he stopped and then ran like helll...probalby had that deer in the headlight moment...."gotta do something, so go straight ahead"....

but again, that's still communication pre snap...who's got who...that DE could have gone inside and taken the back away, could ahve dropped in coverage, or straight up rush the passer w/out the hesitation.
a whole series of "if/thens" for the defense....

which is difficult to execute in 3 seconds. but it can be done.

Yeah, going to be interesting. Our inexperience in the front seven has been the biggest killer on defense and Mullen absolutely toyed with our linebackers in the passing game.

Going to be interesting to see if we can step up.

agreed. the good news, we got to see that style of offense already, and by what is by all rights a better team than MSU....but a lot of similar concepts.

i expect a better performance all in all....but also expect to take a few lumps too. kinda is what it is.....

siap, we don't have to shut them down completely, but we need to keep them out of the endzone, force FG's (red area defense is more important than what happens between the 20's or 30's) and whenever we have the opportunity to force punts or get a turnover, have to take advantage of it...."bend don't break" effort could get us thru this game is what i'm getting at.

The added wrinkle being their QB is much more inclined to run the football.

We can't get pressure on the QBs, that's honestly been our biggest downfall as a defense. So I'm less worried about run heavy teams, because despite a lack of pressure on the QB with the exception of Georgia we've held our own against the run.

Considering Georgia State, BYU, & UTC pretty much do nothing but try to run the ball the team has at least been exposed to lots of variation of running schemes already. Ultimately though we need to be able to own time of possession and drive the ball on their defense. That'll be the key I think, can't have 3 and outs or turnovers, and hopefully we're able to roll up 30 or more run plays and still hit the 4+ YPC average we're at now.

I think Maurer and the WRs being able to feast on some man coverage was shown, so I don't know how willing MSU is going to be to try and pressure the OL. Which means we might see lots of zone defenses with limited pressure, if that's the case then the OL & RBs have to be able to make them pay.
