Yeah it’ll be interesting to see if we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I doubt if there are many staff changes this year....maybe add Tosh Lupoi as the defensive line coach and ride out. Will improve recruiting and hopefully defensive line play. Order a bunch of weed and Xanax for Vol Twitter and enjoy the quiet time.

It’s gonna be real sad in here if we lay an egg on Saturday.
agreed. but this is one of those games that has a feel like we're going to get ourselves to the point where we believe we should win.....when in reality, taking all the actual football stuff in to account, we really shouldn't maybe--we're a home dog, they're getting all 8 of those players back, we're dropping LB's like flies, and i'd say when it comes to make picks, a good many prognosticators out there are going to pick MSU.....and we're gonna be all like "blasphemy!"

and we'll be left looking back thinking "yeah, they're better than we thought, and we're still not anywhere near as good as we thought".

and that would be very very sad....

hope to avoid that. i do think we can win this game......but we're going to have to be very "un-Tennessee" like to start winning some conference games. and we need the rest of these teams to continue to struggle some. hope the noon crowd can bring it again.

I'm no baker fan, but whether or not a top drafted QB is successful has so much more to do with OL, coaches, culture, etc...than it does the actual QB himself. People act like a QB can turn around a bad team by himself. I'd never use my first round pick on a QB until I had a really good OL in place. Just going to get him killed or burned out like the browns have done close to a dozen times over the last decade or so.

Yep. Wonder what Mayfield could do if he also had the left side of the Colts line.

Exactly this. All of it.

Nah...Butch sunk himself when he passed on one of the best offensive line coaches in college for lowly Don Mahoney. Where is he coaching now? West Virginia Tech?
“Best staff in America” and Willie Martinez don’t belong in the same sentence.
I personally don't think Mahoney was that bad. I know for a fact he was hand-tied by Butch over who he was allowed to target. There were multiple recruits he wanted that Butch wouldn't allow him to take who turned into great SEC linemen at other schools. A lot of them ended up at Vandy and killed us the next 4 years.

100%

Winning this one would be on par with beating Kentucky last year to me. I understand they aren’t ranked nearly as highly but to me they’re about the same level of competition.

Beating them would be considered a pretty good coaching job.

I look for the possibility of Jay Graham returning also. VQ had mention last winter that it was almost imminent that he was joining the staff bc Coach Yak may have been leaving. I think Jays contract is up after this year and I bet DJ test the waters again

This game comes down to getting a lead & being able to run the ball.

From a pure numbers point the biggest issue we're having is sustaining drives. The good news though against our stiffest competition to date with a new Freshman QB starting we looked better at moving the ball. 20 first downs and 5/12 on 3rd down (Georgia had 26 first downs and was 5/11 on 3rd down). Turnovers and an inability to milk the clock and get yards in the run game did us in as they began to pound the rock with more ease in the 2nd half.

Against Florida we only had 12 first downs. I'm hopeful though.

the level of competition isn't really all that close. but that's not the point.

this game is huge for both teams. both look at it as a must win. so i expect a very competitive game, and this is a game, much like the BYU game, where you will probably have some opportunities to break away or make a game changing play.

we need to take advantage when they present themselves....and not squader them like we've shown up to this point.

and we need MSU to continue to struggle some..... i think if this staff can continue to keep this team engaged and competing, and winning a few games a long the way, it's a good coaching job. especially now considering how thin we are in some key spots.

we'll see how it plays out.

First why is he doing this? Just seems so dumb.

Second are they remoting him in for his radio show or is he coming down and just sleeping up there?

Finally....this almost makes me want to lose out so that he stays up there until next year.[/QUOTE

Promotes his show, him, his radio station, and the sponsor Toyota of Knoxville

Thought Graham got extended along with the promotion in title.

Like the Titans?

Too Soon

I can't figure out why the Titans are so up & down. I don't know if Vrabel just isn't a good enough HC or if it's finally time to give up on Mariota. There's plenty of weapons on the team, Henry, Walker, Davis, and now A.J. Brown...yet they are in the bottom of every offensive category.

Saturday night in the bayou is gonna be crazy
All their fans are gonna be crazy and talking like ED O with all day to party before the game

My biggest concerns vs MSU is they’ve had two weeks to prepare whereas we played a late game and got beat up.

That plus we’re a young team (most of our guys are 18-19) and CJP said most of their starters are 4th and 5th year guys. That’s huge.

Small silver lining with our youth would be the ability to bounce back faster. I'm just hoping MSU doesn't have the dogs to run with the young pups.

They give up a lotta points and yardage though, may have one of the weaker SEC defenses we'll face. And that's interesting considering their only real competition was Auburn in the first 5 games. We are worse in PPG for offense & defense, but have also played 2 of the top teams in the SEC (both still undefeated & both with top 8 defenses in PPG).

So hopefully our offense explodes a bit in a game with a defense that we should be able to score on.

Kansas State was the only opponent MSU held under 300 yards total offense, and still lost that game 31-24. We take care of the ball and can sustain some drives on offense and put them into a situation where they gotta pass to win, we should pull out the W.

They like to run the ball, and despite our record we've held 3 of our 5 opponents to under 155 yards rushing, and UTC hitting 151 was really just garbage time. Georgia put a hurting on us there, but otherwise we've held teams at 4 YPC or less.
