Today in Tennessee football history..........

September 19, 1998..........

This one was too easy.....
The Gators came to Knoxville as the #2 ranked team in the country and riding a five game winning streak over the Vols. In OT tied 17-17, Jeff Hall kicked a 41 yrd field goal to take the lead 20-17. UF wasn’t able to mount a drive and Collins Cooper lined up for a 32 yrd attempt. In John Ward’s words, “ No sir-ee....No sir-ee! Pandemonium reigns!”

...and my son's third birthday. Today he turns 24. Hard to believe both those great moments happened 21 years ago

starting off with #10 and #5 wasn't fun.
That was one of the best "turnaround" seasons in UT history.

And played them both so close the year before. UT won the first half against GA in '80 and Herschel won the 2nd half.

I was at the USC game sitting in the endzone where they kicked the game winning field goal praying it would be no good.

Vols up 26-10 in the 4th quarter and UCLA scored 2 touchdowns and 2 2 pt conversions to tie. Very disappointing.

The Vols opened the season, and the Coach John Barnhill era, vs Furman. Johnny “Gone with the Wind” Butler had two great punt returns that set up his TD passes to Mike Balitsaris and a 47 yarder to Al Hunt. The Vols Defense was strong to start the season with a 32-6 victory over the Purple Hurricanes.

After an opening day tie with UCLA, and an injury to Condredge Holloway, the Vols hosted Kansas for the only home night game of the year. Randy Wallace got his first start of his career and helped lead UT to a 17-6 victory. Mike Gayles had 80 yrds on 14 carries, and Stanley Morgan scored from the one to secure the win.

Behind the rushing of Hank Lauricella, Herky Payne, Andy Kosar, and Bert Rechichar, the Vols defeated
Mississippi Southern 56-0. Funds raised by the 23,000 in attendance helped fund the building of a new Boys Club. General Neyland was given a new Cadillac as a gift for his Silver Anniversary victory.

Based on that arc, it's never going to get there.

Wake Forest came to Knoxville to start the ‘37 season. A young sophomore got his first action as a Vol and didn’t disappoint. George Cafago showed why he would become one of the greatest players in UT history.
Red Harp tossed TDs to Edwin “Cheek” Duncan and George Hunter to ease the Vols to a 32-0 victory.

After starting 0-2, the Vols were looking to get back to .500 when Auburn came to Knoxville. On the 5th play of the game, freshman QB Alan Cockrell went down with a season ending injury. Steve Alatorre came in and lead the Vols to 10 first half points, including his 1yrd touchdown run. The second half was scoreless with UT up 10-7 when Auburn got the ball with 5:35 left. The wishbone attack drove the Tigers to the UT 4 yrd line with 15 seconds remaining. Tiger QB Ken Hobby fumbles the snap and recovered, but without a timeout, the game ended.

My first game as a student. Since we were in quarters then I wasn't at School yet for the Maryland game. Went on to beat LSU the next week and I was one excited freshman. But then Alabama and that whole North Texas State thing kinda crushed things. Ugggh, then Vandy at home...

So did you go on the big 1975 Tennessee trip to Hawaii?;)
