One area we need to take advantage of against MSU is on special teams.

Mississippi State
106th in punt return defense 11 ypr
105th in Kickoff return defense 23 ypr
99th in kickoff returns 17 ypr
46th in punt returns 9 ypr

Tennessee
14th in punt returns 17 ypr
29th in kickoff returns 25 ypr
1st in kickoff return defense 0 ypr
40th in punt return defense 4 ypr

We have the better pass defense Tennessee is ranked 37th in the country in pass defense and MSU is 56th. We are also slightly better in passing offense, we're 97th and they're 106th.
It seems you're looking at total yards, which is a worst practice, since they are easily skewed to play selection, opponent, and tempo. Tennessee has defended the least passes/game in the league thus far, so total pass yards defended is skewed. By YPA or passer rating, we are nose to nose with MSU.

Same with passing offense. We have more passes/game. But even this skews things, because JG has been so bad on some plays that regular stats do not capture. PFF looks beyond regular stats and he is ranked far below Stevens. The real question is if Stevens or freshman Shrader starts. Same with JG or Maurer. This might well be meaningless given the unknowns. I just know their 2 guys have been better than our 2 so far.

How is the strength of schedule comparison?

I just went by the team stat rankings on The NCAA website

When Kiffin was hired, people were very split on whether he was a good hire. Many people called it a terrible hire because he was coming off a horrendous tenure as an NFL coach.
I remember some kick back most of it coming from those who though Fulmer shouldnt have been hire.

I’m not advocating for Tee over Pruitt. What I’m saying is if it is decided at some point this season that Pruitt isn’t going to get it done - I believe a 1-7 start or sub 4 win finish would do it - that the powers that be may find it most prudent to hand it over to Tee and try to keep the bulk of this staff together in order to provide continuity to the current roster.
I think if you lose a HC after only 2 years that you have done a disservice as a University. I possibly understand after 3 yrs but I believe you have to give Pruitt 4 years.

Heck almost everyone said even before Pruitt was hired that it would be close to a 5 year rebuild. I think everyone needs to just tighten up. We are playing young guys all over the field. (Basically all Freshman and Sophomores)

The only reason Pruitt is even catching this much flak is because of absolutely awful QB play against Georgia State, BYU, and Florida (Yes the defense was bad) However, a serviceable QB who didn’t make numerous turnovers would have beat Georgia State.

Hurts could’ve been sold here. Come beat bama and take us back to relevance. Would’ve had a shot.

With either of them we are 3-1. Word is fulmer told pruitt to go get a transfer and he was set on JG. Yee might have listened
There is no earth in the multiverse in which Hurts would have chosen a rebuilding Tennessee with a balanced offense over the loaded playoff ready Oklahoma with back to back heisman QB’s.

Let’s be reasonable here

The whole team treated that game like a scrimmage. Anyone placing that game on JG is trying too hard to pave Narrative Street. That was a failure by everyone, but mostly the staff there.

It was a five year rebuild to SEC title contention. If anyone told you 10 minutes before we hired him that he’d go 3-9 with a loss to Georgia State in Year 2 you’d say you wanted to go in a different direction.

No one is saying we should be competing with the big dogs. But we should be better than we’ve been so far.

The turnovers are on JG. I don’t care what you say and I will blame them on him and Ty Chandler. Had nothing to do with the staff. The staff played it like a scrimmage because they were trying to get a look at all their players but that game is definitely on JG. We had wide open receivers all over the place that game.

Lol.

Well when you expect your QB to be serviceable and he isn’t and you planned a whole season around him and he comes out and flops like he has there isn’t much you can do. Our defense has played better each game as the players on the field have become younger (Pruitts recruits)

This kind of speculation is beyond pointless

How do other teams get around bad QBs? Goodness gracious we act like we’re the only team with this problem.

Figure it out and beat BYU and Georgia State. It’s that simple.
