Same here. Don't have it in me to defend Pruit but nothing is changing until the QB situation does. Forget Pruitt, Chaney is proof of that.

He lead the offense when we had people calling Kiffin a genius, and had Dooley's pathetic arse a DC hire away from a huge extension.
Like him or not when the game is on the line, almost everyone will admit he'll get some points on the board.. if you give him anything to work with, but it's obvious, he doesn't have that.
Chaney didnt get dumb over night.

A decent QB would reveal our oline is actually pretty decent. 1st game I believe JG wasn't sacked until the 4th quarter. BYU no sacks and ran for over 200. UTC was UTC. Florida sold out on the run and dared the QB to beat them. Oline has made strides imo.
I agree, plus they are young and will get even better as other big good young OL come on..but...they can not ground and pound yet...give em a couple more years and stopping the running game will be a chore sell out or not.

Does anyone have a recent example where a coach took over a program, had 2 historically bad seasons with historically bad losses, but eventually turned it around and became a championship level coach?

That's not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely curious if there is precedent for giving a coach 4 or 5 years even if the first 2 or 3 are horrendous.

Also, isn't it crazy how similar arky and Tennessee have been these last 7 years or so? They're going through the exact same thing we are right now.
Majors and the pirate come to mind right off the bat. Saban had a historically bad loss his first season. I'm sure there's more but those are off the top of my head

Unpopular opinion...short of pulling donations to avoid the Schiano hire I don't know how much fault you can put on 'em. Pruitt is in the top 30 highest paid coaches in the country, as a first time HC. The staff are all in the top paid for their spot, friend I think is top 5 highest paid. Chaney might now be the highest paid OC in the country or damn close.

I mean the boosters need to do what exactly? Cause why open a checkbook more when we've had poor coaching searches and lack results on the field.
His point is that coaches all talk about how bad our boosters are with not pulling in the same direction and no one wants the job because of that.

I just don't think the coach who could "fix" this next year is going to take any amount of money to come to Knoxville. Because they are either 1. highly paid where they are and not interested 2. not coaching

I would really like to know why some candidates, some that were vocal about their interest even didn't get a legit chance to interview. They might not have been "long term" answers, but I think we'd have a bit less bumps in the road that just exist with hiring a first timer.

(Les Miles specifically is one I still don't get why he wasn't a serious candidate....what box did he not check?)

Butch was here for 5 years and all of his players hated him equally.... Soooo let's not act like keeping a lame duck coach for an extended period of time is a much better option...

This cycle of hire a coach and divide the locker room because older guys don’t fit into what new coach wants to do isn’t working. Hasn’t been for 10+ years.
We held on to butch for 5 years for that very reason. Was that good for us?

As OC, all day long. Pay him 2 million to be OC. I'd never want him in charge of a program though.

I’d like him as an OC as well but that’s not what the caller wanted, he was saying for head coach. The cycle has already begun again. Pretty soon we’ll be getting reports of Urban Meyer eating at Calhoun’s.

Bill McCartney at Colorado. Art Briles at Baylor.

The pirate? Saban did have a bad loss but not a bad season (bowl game I think).

So...WHO DO YOU GOT?..

NOBODY that will do any better with this roster right now...NOBODY.
Satterfield @ Appy State would take this job in a heartbeat. Dude would coach circles around Pruitt (Not that that is saying much). There's plenty of HC's out there who would be 3-1 record for us right now. This whole "no one wants to coach here" narrative is lazy AF to me.

There are plenty of coaches we could have hired in 2017 that would have beaten Georgia State and BYU by now. Come on, man.
NOFREAKINBODY...this is not 2017...this is now..and the coaches did a great job with BYU. That loss was not on them. It was squarely on JG and AT. They isht the bed against GS by using it as scrimmage game while GS actually came to play ball. Play them again and we run them by 45, so that game literally tells you nothing other than a bad learning experience.

WHO DO YOU GOT RIGHT NOW?

You know the answer.
