Heading there in a couple of weeks. Usually use Trip Advisor to find places. Would like some more input as well.

Where would you suggest??

1. Desi Vega: absolute must. Little pricey but worth it. Casual attire. Who Dat shrimp. Porterhouse steak.
2. Creole House: Good La. food with good prices.
3. Ruby Slipper: Awesome/funky breakfast place.
4. Deanie's: Seafood. A little pricey.
5. Cafe Du Monde: Beignets and coffee (cash only). Not the best food but a N.O. landmark.
7. The Gumbo Shop: Gumbo.
8. Commander's Palace: formal (wear tie). Pricey. Reservations necessary.
9. Brennan's: Amazing brunch. Dress up and pricey. Bananas Foster
10. Bourbon House: Oyster bar and nice restaurant.
11. Willie Mae's Scotch House: soul food. Best fried chicken on the planet. Outskirts of city. Area feels sketchy but it's safe.
IMO...
12 Mother's: Po Boys are meh
13. Mr B's Bistro: overpriced, over rated.

My pleasure. Wife is from Lousiana and I'm fat so you can trust the recommendations. ;)
Was your list in order of how you’d pick them? We’ve added most to our Trip Advisor trip and just curious. We are about 2 weeks away.

No. Just as the places came to me and my wife. Although I will say, if I only had 90 minutes in New Orleans, I would absolutely go to Desi Vega.

Domilise's Po Boy Shop
GW Fins
Commander's Palace
Jacques-Imo's
La Boca
Lola's
Nola's
Stanley's - Delicious, breakfast all day
Muriel's Jackson Square
Grab a giant daiquiri at Fat Tuesday and go walk along the river front and watch the sunset.

Screams New Orleans:
Commanders Palace: doubles as one of the best brunch places
Galatoire's (Friday lunch institution, if you'll be there then, but anytime)

Peche: order the whole roasted fish! Maybe the best dish in town.

Oysters
Luke: happy hour
Casamento's: super old-school tile floors and walls (yes, they hose it down)

Brunch:
Brennans
Atchafalaya

Anytime awesome:
La Petite Grocery
Coquette
Herbsaint
Couchon (I'm more into fish places, but you gotta give this meat props!)
Brigsten's (old school)
Dickie Brennan's steakhouse
Mr B's (someone above didn't like it, but I'll stand by the fried oysters, gumbo, bbq shrimp)

Po Boys:
Domilise's (for extra credit: Peyton's favorite HS hangout)

Actually, everyone's recommendations on this thread are good and I'm getting hungry

Make reservations. You can always change or cancel them, but a lot of these places fill up. It's not a last minute drop-in food town. You can even make reservations at two different places at slightly different times and decide later, but don't be a d**k and fail to cancel because somebody is trying to get in

Slightly related, any recommendations on places to stay? Will be there Sunday-Wednesday and will be doing the basic tourist stuff. Hoping there are good, clean and maybe cheaper options available that people have experience with.

This past May, from Sat. to Wed., I stayed at the Royal Sonesta in the French Quarters for 216.00 per night - taxes included. I got this rate off of Hotwire.com. It was a good hotel (Travelocity 4 stars) and i would recommend it. I am sure there are cheaper options in the French Quarters but I would be cautious of trying to go too cheap.

We stayed at the Omni Riverfront. Walk out the back of the hotel, hang a right, and go in the entrance to Harrah's. You can walk all the way through the casino in the air conditioning and come out on Canal Street.

We had a blast on our trip!! Hope you do too!!

I've stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott on Julia Street and would recommend it.
Nice hotel a couple of blocks from the Quarter.

If you don't have to be in the French Quarter we like the Alder Hotel.

I think my wife was looking in the garden district originally and I have been looking more towards downtown, so French Quarter is not that important. Thanks for the suggestion, will give Alder a look.

At the end of Canal St., I like to take the ferry across, then walk a block or two down to the Crown & Anchor pub. Have cash for the ferry.
