As always, I'm just thankful to have so many worried about me possibly being let down.

The funny part with Caleb is he writes the hype articles 1 day, and then the next, writes one questioning where the hype is coming from lol.
well, he knows his target audience, i'll give him that lol.

If Byrd signed under Pruitt he would've never seen the offensive side of the ball. And I'm sure he'd be a draft pick, but a NFL WR he is not. Brandon Johnson doesn't have the ability to break tackles, no wiggle to him at 180lbs. I say if JJ isn't 100% then manage him but I say feature Murphy and Jones/ Ramel. We need one of them to be a playmaker in 2020 and tbh everytime Murphy touched the ball it was for a significant gain. I want to see more of him and he was on the field alot after the Kentucky game.

Brandon aint weighing 180..He almost at 200 pounds..Brandon gonna shocked the world this year..Chaney will use Brandon way more than Helton did.

Stewart, have you witnessed a decade (or more) of disaster from a Top-15 all-time program as bad it has been from the University of Tennessee over the last 10+ years? College football is cyclical, but I can’t think of a program with the stature and history of the Vols being down for this long. And in your mind, can they truly get back to being a Top 5-10 team again consistently?
Jeremy Shulman, Melbourne, Fla.

Yes, I have witnessed something similar. Allow me to familiarize you with Oklahoma Sooners football during the decade between Barry Switzer’s departure (1989) and Bob Stoops’ out-of-nowhere national championship in his second season (2000). Over 11 seasons, OU — which holds a .724 all-time winning percentage, sixth-best nationally — went 68-55-3. Though slightly better than Tennessee’s 67-70 mark in its past 11 seasons, the Sooners’ dark years at one point included five consecutive non-winning seasons, including a 3-8 mark in 1996 and 4-8 in ’97.
Fun fact: I sat in the stands at Soldier Field for the 1997 Pigskin Classic, in which Northwestern beat Oklahoma 24-0 and not a single person in the stadium considered the result surprising. Even worse for the Sooners, that Northwestern team went on to finish 5-7.
Then Stoops arrived, and the rest is history.
So yes, I absolutely think Tennessee can get back to being a Top 10 team. The school’s got all the fan support and resources you need to build a powerhouse program, it’s just made some staggeringly bad coaching hires over the past decade. Just like Oklahoma did in the ’90s with Howard Schnellenberger (who, like Lane Kiffin, lasted just one season) and John Blake (12-22 in three seasons).
The counterpoint I’ve heard from some — including my podcast co-host — is that Tennessee will never return to glory either because it has to recruit out-of-state against Georgia and Clemson, both of which are in a much loftier place than when Phil Fulmer was winning in Knoxville. To which I’d say, the state of Oklahoma is not exactly teeming with elite football prospects, and Stoops had to recruit against peak-Mack Brown in the state of Texas. He did alright.
The more interesting “can they ever get back?” subject is Nebraska, which, at its peak, was the most dominant program in the entire sport but has not won a conference championship in 20 years and is coming off consecutive 4-8 seasons. I absolutely believe Scott Frost will have the Huskers winning double-digit games and Big Ten West titles by 2020 at the latest, but can Nebraska — with zero geographic advantages and its history defined by a no-longer en vogue offense — get back to the same heights as former rival Oklahoma today?
If you ask me which program is more likely to win a national championship in the next decade, Nebraska or Tennessee, I’d still take the Vols, even without yet knowing whether Jeremy Pruitt will prove to be the next Kirby Smart or the next Derek Dooley. It can still recruit Top 10 classes every year; Nebraska cannot.”
Pretty good article. I don't see the Huskers making a huge stride this year as many are predicting. For that matter I don't see the Vols making a huge stride either. I do feel the Vols will get better and much of that will occur after the UF, UGA, Bama stretch. I still don't like the fact that Martinez flipped to them and will always wonder what he could have done at UT. There's actually talk of him being a heisman candidate. Talk about hype. I like our position because we're actually the Rodney Dangerfield of college football at present. As fans we need to be a little patient and have a reality check. All that is lacking across the board is in-game live reps for a lot of our players. Let the Huskers enjoy the over-hype while we work our tails off in a much tougher conference. I have complete confidence in this staff getting us back to where we belong...in the top 5 every year no later than 2021 and CJP will never go back to 'Bama once he's built it.

There's a local show called sports night and it has rotating hosts from WNML. I had always suspected they picked the content on how knowledgable/ignorant the 2 hosts were each show.

Last night they covered the least thought provoking episode I've ever seen, fluff article ranking the SEC coaches and the Bristol race.

The hosts?... Will West and Heather Harrington. 5 minutes in, just handed the remote to my wife and went outside.

Huge mistake. Should have handed her the remote after 1 minute and went outside

pump the brakes on 7-5?

lol.

I would. As much as I want the Vols to have a winning season and play in a bowl game. It’s hard for me to expect it.

I am hopeful that they have made enough progress under Pruitt to beat Vanderbilt for the sixth win and qualify for a bowl game. Even if it’s not in Florida any bowl is an
accomplishment for this team and program.

But, it’s very likely this team doesn’t make a bowl if they lose to Vanderbilt again.

I know many fans & media types seem to think wide receiver is our strongest position group on the team this year but the more I pay attention the more I think it’s going to be our running back room. We have four guys in Chandler, Jordan, Banks, and Gray that could be hot on any given Saturday. That’s having options. Having our QB, O-Line, and running backs on the same page is I think going to do wonders for our offense. The two most defining elements of being successful in the SEC is the ability to run the ball on offense and the ability to stop the run on defense. It’s the reason behind the oft cited descriptor, “line of scrimmage league.”

We’ve heard a lot of good things about Gray. He’s mature. He has a tremendous work ethic. He’s a true professional. He has tremendous talent. When he was recovering from shoulder surgery in the spring he was spending time before and after practice working on learning protections, the playbook, and recognizing and understanding his keys. His work ethic in particular reminds me of Rondale Moore, Freshman all-American at Purdue last year that amassed over 2,000 all-purpose yards as a true freshman. Big 10 freshman of the year.

Earlier this week, Bituli talked about how To’oto’o convinced the coaches to get the linebacker room to set up a group chat so he could start learning the defense while he was still in California. After the spring game Darnell Wright bemoaned the fact that he hadn’t taken the early enrollee route.

Justifiably, most folks will want to temper expectations for true freshmen, but from what I can see, from the enthusiasm of Jeremy Banks to almost every other single level of our football team, the younger guys and guys who have sort of been lost on the depth chart are pushing the older more established guys and they are pushing hard. Morris, Calbert, and Wright are pushing the offensive linemen, Brandon Johnson, Tyler Byrd, Jordan Murphy, and Jacquez Jones, even Ramel Keyton are pushing the older receivers. Emerson, Simmons, and Bumphus are pushing the guys on the D-Line. To’oto’o, Crouch, Harrison, & Reid are pushing the linebackers. Burrell and McCollough are pushing the defensive backs.

We have two young QBs pushing each other and according to PFF a returning QB that is one of the best in the conference. Almost everyone praises Guarantano as being smart and tough. Last year it was said he was handcuffed with kid gloves. Ainge said earlier this fall that an OC is fortunate if he gets 60% of his play calls correct. With a good smart QB able to switch the play after he comes to the line of scrimmage, even if he is only right half of the time he boosts the OC’s percentage numbers up to 80%. Guarantano spoke this week about the improved communication between him and the offensive line, an obvious necessity if he’s changing plays and we want everyone to be on the same page.

If you total up all the “effort” time in a football game it’s going to come out to around 7 minutes on each side of the ball. (Remember Freak’s cut ups of game films with a video showing all offensive plays and a separate video showing all defensive plays). Those 7 minutes are going to come in about 70 bites of approximately 6 seconds each. Callaway explained in his interview this week that in regards to consistency we don’t have a problem with the first 30 or 40 bites of that 7 minutes but it’s being able to sustain our focus on doing things the right way when we get a bit banged up or tired that is going to define how consistent and how mentally tough we are as a football team. I would suggest that having fresh guys (depth) that we can roll out there in every position group during a game without expecting a drop-off in performance is also likely going to make us more consistent.

ESPN, Phil Steele, and Bill Connelly, among others, expect us to be one of the most improved teams in all of college football this year. While those analysts are basing their expectations on the tangibles they can capture with their prediction models, my expectations are only reinforced by the intangibles we are discovering with this team, from the younger guys, to the almost forgotten guys, to the quality changes that have occurred with our staff since we last were on the field. ESPN, in explaining their FPI, states that humans and pollsters have a hard time divorcing themselves from prior won-loss records. Pruitt, his staff, and his players refuse to talk about last year. This is a new team and the energy is real. I can feel it and I hope you can too. jmo.

If you had a blog about football and life, I would have that page bookmarked and check it every day for new content.

True.
You know they're bad but sometimes I forget just how much after not hearing them for a while.

We trash all of our media, it's what we do. But those 2 are on another level. And somehow, he's actually the worst of the 2.

7-5 seems like a fair expectation to me. Last year's team probably wins 6 games with this year's OOC schedule. This roster should be substantially better than last year at every position group except for DL. Coaches are better as well. Locke and Shurmur being gone from Missouri and Vandy doesn't hurt either.

If UT only wins 6 games I'll be disappointed. I won't be calling for Pruitt to be fired or anything but I'll definitely lose some of my optimism.

Doesn't matter what we think though, only matters what they do. Let's sit back and enjoy the season.

This is very true. He blows hot and cold from article to article. And I don't disagree with his article, but he is basically arguing what most all Vol fans have long realized; we will live and die this season based on line play.

No Callaway or Palmer on the team anymore? lol

I know our fans (this board in general) wants to overreact, but WR is not the group to worry about.

Callaway - SR
Palmer - JR
Johnson -SR
Jennings - RS SR
Byrd - SR
Murphy - JR
Gibbs - JR (sitting this year)
Jones
Keyton
Gray
Tillman
Montgomery (a PWO, but I think he becomes a contributor next season)

Fansided is such a joke.

A bunch of guys who think they're journalists because they got a B+ in Comp II their Sophomore year.
TBF, the vast majority of people covering/writing about sports nowadays are not journalists: they're sports-writers. The market for actual sports journalism is virtually dead compared to the market for tweets and articles about what happened in the 15 minutes of practice made open to the media.

DL worries me a little more than OL, I just think the OL will improve, especially with Chaney around.

And I sort of disagree with him on the scheming around the OL, I don't think he would tell others steps he's considering. You can use TE's and such for quick, short yardage gains to minimize the time the QB needs, I think we all know that. At least you can hurt your QB with playcalling, which Helton often did. Chaney won't if they're not ready, imo.

I've pounded the table on my disdain for Heather Harrington. I've stopped listening 12-3. Cant do it. I've tried. Just cant.

I remember Murphy and palmer dropping more passes than them being caught 👀

If an actual talented and insightful radio personality ever started a sports talk show that wasn’t affiliated with the vol network it would absolutely blow up in Knoxville.

The fox sports clowns basically proved that and they don’t even have media credentials or an understanding of football.
