Official Countdown to the 2019 Tennessee Vols Football Season

19 days........

On November 26, 1977, Captain Greg Jones finished his career in magnificent fashion. The linebacker collected 25 tackles (19 of which were solo stops), an interception, a fumble recovery, and a pass break-up in the Vols 42-7 victory over Vanderbilt.

I can’t pick just one. So, here we go.....
From October 17, 1992 - January 1, 1994, Heath Shuler tossed a TD pass in 18 consecutive games.

On November 5, 1938, the Vols shut out UTC 45-0, starting a streak of 17 consecutive regular season shutouts. The streak ended on October 19, 1940 when Bama scored 12 pts in their 27-12 loss to the Vols.

This is almost unbelievable... I would bet the farm this is record that will never be broken.

On November 15, 1986, Tennessee traveled to Jackson to face the #20 Ole Miss Rebels. A late Tennessee rally, an NCAA record of 16 consecutive rushing attempts by William Howard, and his 3 yrd TD gave the Vols a 22-10 victory.

What a workhorse FB William Howard was, I can remember Bill Anderson telling John Ward that Old Miss just didn't have an answer to Tennessee's William Howard during the Old Miss game

216 games Neyland coached.....109 shutouts.

Think about that for a second

Honestly, it is mind-numbing. I know we play in a different era of football than the General did but I wish I could go back in time and see how feared we were nationwide among other programs.
One would have to believe that if you were about to get a field goal on some of his teams you were considered very successful.

Off the top of my head...the only feat I can compare it to was Babe Ruth hitting 54 home runs in 1920. He hit more than 15 teams hit that season......and there were ONLY 16 teams in MLB. Makes your head spin.

The 1939 Tennessee Volunteers finished the regular season, undefeated, untied, un-scored upon and several opposing teams had minus yards rushing.
Let that sink in for a minute!

In 1962, Tennessee was still running the “single wing “ and the forward pass was an afterthought in Knoxville. Nevertheless, John Bill Hudson was a star at left end. Hudson led the Vols with 259 yrds receiving and 3TDs on 15 receptions. He also had a 76 yrd interception vs Kentucky. Hudson would go on to play in the CFL and Coached the Tennessee School for the Deaf to a National Championship in football and track.

On October 25,2003, James Banks had his best game of his short UT career. He had a 25 yrd TD run and caught 7 passes for 103 yrds. But when the game was on the line in OT, Banks came through with 2TDs and a 2pt conversion. His 14 points in OT are the most overtime points in school history. UT won 51-43.

The University of Tennessee has been a member of the SEC since the beginning in 1933. Since then, the Vols have won more SEC Championships than any team but one.
Starting with the 1938 team and ending with the 1998 team, UT has 13 SEC Championship banners!

Peyton Manning threw for 11,201 yrds and 89 touchdowns as a Vol. His records and impact are too numerous to list. Everyone knows his passing prowess. What most don’t remember is that he is credited for 153 rushing attempts for -181 yrds........but had 12 career rushing touchdowns. None more famous than his boot-leg at Alabama in 1995.

Loved the naked bootleg play.

From 1983-1986, Dale Jones roamed the field at linebacker for the Vols. The All-American had a knack for the dramatic and played his best in the biggest games. He stands in 2nd all time in UT history with 11 career forced fumbles, including 5 in 1985.
