Depth chart/lineup

Not sure how anyone can look at that depth chart and feel good about this team, based on:
--No proven playmakers on either side of the ball. (EB, Al, LL, BIg John or Carter on D -- Pickens, Henry, Still/Davis, Dobbs)
--No proven deep threat at WR to stretch the defense and get the safeties away the LOS so a running game can be established
--Of the top 3 RBs, 2 are small and one does not have SEC speed
--DL and LB are anywhere from unknown to unproven.
--No proven speed rusher (Taylor inconsistent)
--None of the LBs are proven or have not shown an ability to make plays sideline to sideline
--Same group of OL that have not been able to even slow down a good SEC pass rush or get to the 2nd level to make blocks in the run game
--Only 3 of the OL have top SEC talent and one will not be at full speed (if he plays) and the other 2 are true freshmen
--Young corners who have shown flashes but still struggled to tackle in space and cover top end WRs
--A very talented safety who struggles to line up correctly and gets lost way too often and a bunch of unproven guys at the other S position.
--A QB who has proven to be "tough" and has an ability to take a hit but not to always find the open receiver quickly or see the blitzes (not all his fault)
--Most of the top talent on this team are freshmen and sophs and unproven
--Very few of the players on this team would even be in the 2 deep of the teams in the 90s
--Still a lot of questions about this teams' overall toughness after they just absolutely laid down in the last 2 games when one win gets a bowl game
--Throw in new coordinators on both sides of the ball and you get a little confusion and a lot of struggles.

I appreciate the optimism many of you have but most of us who remember the good ol days 1989-2004 can recognize the lack of talent available on this roster. 5-6 wins should be expected but anything over that would be very good and 7 or 8 wins should qualify Pruitt for SEC Coach of the Year.
1. Calloway and Ty Chandler are a proven play maker on Offense. Darrel Taylor and Bituli have shown their ability to make plays on defense. Not to mention Fr. All American Bryce Thompson.
2. Josh Palmer is exactly that, a deep threat that can stretch the field.
3. Ty Chandler is 5'11 205 similar size to a past Vols RB that had some success, AK.

I think this is the first time I've seen anyone list Savion Williams as a second stringer. How can you pencil Henry T. as a starter when he hasn't been through a spring or fall camp yet??

As I said....it’s a guess. There’s some prognostication in there. I think he’s going to be very good.

If Trey Smith is healthy, I probably see him starting at LT or RT instead of Guard. He can do either place.

Darnell Wright will be interesting. He was one of the most impressive OL in the Under Armor All American game.

If Trey Smith is playing OT, we’re in trouble. He’s not a Tackle, he’s a Guard. He was average at Tackle last year, dominant at Guard the year prior.

Hope they prove it this year. But, when I check the All SEC teams, none of them even made 3rd team. Good players but not elite SEC players......to date. The 2 cornerbacks have a chance to be very good as does Calloway. Jury still out on everyone else that you mentioned.

Nigel Warrior is a total liability in deep coverage. Our defense plays man almost every down now, and having Warrior cover a deep half of the field is not going to work.

Well I guess it's time to make a guess about what the team will do. I think the O line will be much better than most expect. the quarterback will have more time and the running backs ypc will improve. I also expect the D line to be somewhat better as most players are experienced with the system.. The linebackers will be improved due to experience in the system. I hope the new guys help but you have to give them some time in the system. On the back end I think we will be solid. I hate to venture a guess as I have no internet points, and I have been wrong in the past, due to massive amounts of Orange drink. I expect to see us go 7-5 or 8-4. Just a guess by an old Vol.

There’s enough depth and talent on this roster to win 4 non conference games, and 2 or 3 SEC games. Beating Miss St and SC are keys to making a bowl game.

If you want "proven" players, perhaps you shouldn't follow a rebuild.

Looking at the OP's depth chart, it looks better than I would have guessed if asked to make a prediction this time last year and much better than I would have guessed if asked to make a prediction two years ago. What we have is a solid group of experienced individuals athletic enough to be on most SEC rosters. That's encouraging.

While I love that movie (1st one only), I'm looking for a rational discussion on this subject. I appreciate the optimism but I just don't see this being a great year. I just agree with the unnamed SEC coach who said Pruitt will get the job done if they give him time. The talent pool is so shallow, it will take 5 years to get it back. TBH, I am tired of all of the posters who spend the entire summer crowing "we're back" and then want the coach fired for not meeting your personal expectations.

86, I agree that the roster is much stronger, that's why I say 5 or 6 wins is a given. Getting the 7th and/or 8th wins is a tougher task and that's where the lack of proven talent and depth will kick in. I like the young corners and I think Calloway and Palmer have a chsnce to have a good year. However the OL and the front 7 on defense are huge question marks and will have to perform much better than they have in the past. Also, we need to see Guarantano finish off games with a drive for winning TD or to run out the clock in a close game before we count on that.

What are other reasons for great expectations this year?

5 years. Why? Will Saban be gone? Will Muschamp be gone? Smart? Mullen? Odom lol?

Every team is different year to year. You try to recruit the best you can but it's all about chemistry.

Reasons for optimism?
- Year 2 of the defense. Influx of very advanced freshman (and Jucos) to bolster the experienced Defense.

- Jim Chaney.

- Favorable schedule.

8 wins this year imo

RB- Ty Chandler (Jr.), Tim Jordan (Jr.), Eric Gray (Fr.), Jeremy Banks (So.), Carlin Fils-Aime (Sr.)

Chander is the clear #1, but #2 and #3 are not so clear here. Curious if CFA is still used as a special-situation (e.g. end-arounds) type back or if, now that he's bulked up, he'll get more carries. Won't really know Gray's status till the season starts and Banks could also move up in the rotation.

RT- Jahmir Johnson (RSJr.), Marcus Tatum (Sr.)
RG- Trey Smith (Jr.), K’Rojhn Calbert (RSSo.), Chris Akporoghene (Fr.), Jackson Lampley (Fr.)
C- Brandon Kennedy (RSSr.), Ryan Johnson (RSJr.), Riley Locklear (Jr.)
LG- Jerome Carvin (So.), Nathan Niehaus (RSJr.), Oliver Lane (RSFr.)
LT- Wanya Morris (Fr.), Darnell Wright (Fr.)

Isn't Jahmir Johnson more of a G than a T? O-line will be very interesting, because there are so many possibilities for how this shakes out. Morris and Wright could win a starting spot, but I think it'd be a better sign if one of the more experienced players (e.g. Tatum, Niehaus, etc) stepped up and won one of those spots.

DE- Matthew Butler (Jr.), John Mincey (So.), Greg Emerson (RSFr.), Kurot Garland (RSFr.)
NT- Emmitt Gooden (Sr.), Savion Williams (Jr.), Kingston Harris (RSFr.), Elijah Simmons (Fr.)
DE- Aubrey Solomon (Jr.), Darel Middleton (Jr.), Latrell Bumphus (Jr.), JaQuain Blakley (RSJr.)

If we're honest, Solomon is probably not going to be eligible this season. Given that, Savion Williams and Middleton will be the most interesting players to watch.

WILL- Henry To’oto’o (Fr.), Shanon Reid (Jr.)
MIKE- Daniel Bituli (Sr.), Will Ignont (Jr.), JJ Peterson (RSFr.)

Bituli starts for sure. The second ILB is likely either Reid or Ignont. Think Reid was ahead in Spring, but close battle.

I am more optimistic about the offense:
--Tatum is up to 315? If his footwork has improved, he could be a big factor at RT
--There is talent at WR, if Palmer & Calloway can beat press coverage on outside, it would open up the middle (JJ & TE) and improve run game
--Most of the OL have been here for 3 yrs or better. Surely, they have learned something
--Chaney

Defense still a huge question mark. Sure hope they can cause more turnovers b/c still not sure they can stop any of the SEC offenses consistently. Not enough experience in front 7 and not successful experience on the backend. As mentioned, the young corners showed flashes but they need to be able to do this game in and game out. A new DC is also troubling. Turnovers are the great equalizer.

Would u please pick another team? I'm seriously doubting you're a genuine Vol fan, no reason to get on here and sh*t on everything before practice even starts!

The guard position pulls around the line and has big collision type plays compared to tackle. Guard is honestly more dangerous for brain injuries than the tackle position.

Nice breakdown

Burrell is already 2nd string.
T Bailey as well until Solomon gets up to speed. George has to get out the dog house.

I think Henry T is the starter by the 4th game. Roman Harrison sooner. Ried has really improved he might start. Bituli will be lined up everywhere. (WDE, OLB, ILB)

O-line. Who knows lol. A lot of beef there now. That's a plus.

Mincey is a true sophomore at DE/DT but he is strong and rangy. He'll start over Butler I think.

The roster is 200 percent than last year. That's for sure.

Dang I keep underselling Henry T!
Should have stuck with my guns.

Regardless, all these guys are coming along.

2 more weeks

Well. I hate to say I told you so but.....I told you so. Anyone who has watched much college football could see this team was not ready for a successful season. Losing the first game was not good but the coaches and the players overlooked that one and acted like it would be a cakewalk ("We're gonna play everybody in this one"). This team is not good enough or experienced enough to overlook anyone including Chattanooga.

Good news is, there has been improvement from the first game and there is plenty to be excited about going forward.....maybe not this year but in the coming years. This includes:
--OL played OK vs an experienced DL, however, BYU was very vanilla and didn't blitz a lot but the Vols were able to run the ball
--Vols have two SEC level backs who have a chance to do well going forward
--Jennings continues to be only reliable receiver and it's time for Callaway to become part of the offense
--a couple of the freshman LBs are getting better and Bituli will be back soon.
--Should have both CBs back soon but the Vols need reliable play at safety in a big way
--Guarantano has cost the Vols the first 2 games and he has to figure out what he is doing. Help is on the way next year.
--This coaching staff knows what they are doing and they will be successful, if recruiting continues to improve.

Vols will win 4 or 5 games this year which will include 2 or 3 conference games. South Carolina, Vandy and possibly UK are winnable games. There was a lot of improvement from game 1 to game 2 and BYU is a decent team and Vols should have won if they had any help from the QB position. It's gonna get better.

Many of you way overestimated the talent/experience on this team and now, predictably, you want to fire the coaching staff and start over. Just stop that. All you are doing is hurting recruiting. As Coach Pruitt said recently, "we are coming out the wilderness and I guarantee you, you want me (Pruitt) on your side."

To quote Tim Priest from the 1988 0-6 start of the season to a caller: "don't slit your wrist buddy, it's gonna get better!"
