Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Perfect example of how tough the SEC is and how difficult UT's schedule is each season. We've been talking all off season how much easier this falls schedule is compared to recent seasons and yet it's still top 10 in difficulty nationwide.

Yup, the East just keeps getting more solid around us, as is every occasional West opponent. The SEC boasting has absolutely hurt our relative position. We never needed it to begin with and were better off without it.

CPF brings this up quite often. This isn't your dad's SEC. Everyone is recruiting at least decently well these days. Even our worst programs are pulling classes that would be middle of the pack in other conferences.

Yall remember when Pruitt's account tweeted out congratulations to his former high school for winning a championship in basketball? We self-reported that as an NCAA violation (apparently they qualify it as an endorsement of a coach/program) and they took away 4 "Recruiting Evaluation Days" from us for that. The NCAA is a power hungry joke.
lol wow. What does that even mean - "Recruiting Evaluation Days" - such as UT camp days, when they visit a kid's hs to watch him live, or just any evaluating (film, etc) at all?

Dear diary.....

Been 24 hours but Im still steaming, so allow a mini rant here...

I posted maybe a year ago about my having to petition for emergency custody of my kids. Since I got my kids, I've been the sole provider. I'm not complaining about that. I'm fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to do so - although times are sometimes tight, like the next couple of months when they all have birthdays and we school shopping etc. My ex wife doesn't work and doesn't even try to provide for the kids. She is basically homeless, bouncing around between her family and friends couches I guess.

When she had custody from our divorce, she was getting child support and spousal support from me. When I got custody, the child support got terminated (obviously) but the spousal support was only suspended. We've got to court over that now twice. I've told two different judges that I'm willing to not ask for child support if she'd be willing to drop the spousal. She refuses and when i told her if she didn't drop the spousal, I would ask for CS... her reply was "go ahead and try, you'll not get any." Sent me that via text like she's proud to be a dead beat.

Despite testifying that her disability claim was rejected, despite it being proven that she maintained a YMCA membership for the past several years (minus the past year or so), despite having employment records that show she was eligible for rehire in the school system (she was a teacher the duration of our marriage), despite testifying she hasn't even applied for a job since 2015 (we've been seperated since 2013 and divorced since 2014) - the first judge flat out refused to terminated the spousal support.

I appealed to the circuit court and we went back yesterday. She shows up without a lawyer and was nothing but disrespectful to me, my lawyer, and even the judge. The judge had to explain things to her repeatedly. The baliff had to instruct her to stand, or sit, or remain behind her table etc multiple times. She would be presented with evidence in plain black and white, and she would deny it and say it wasn't true or that the courts shouldn't even have that information because it was private. Judge had to explain that it was all available by soupena, and my ex would argue that "it wasn't fair." Etc Etc Etc

I could go on. It was a **** show. Even this judge elected to just continue our case until October. He said because she said she is petitioning her denial for disability, that he wants to give her time to get that resolved. He also said he wants to see what my income is closer to the end of the year. In the meantime, I have to send another 3k to the courts for a bond to cover the what would be arrears spousal support, within the next thirty days. And of course I have to give my lawyer probably another 1-2k at least.

I mean, I'm just so frustrated. I'm no saint but I'm a single dad, have a career, no criminal history, don't drink or use drugs, I literally just work, provide as best for my kids. My ex is an intentionally underemployed alcoholic who is a perpetual victim, takes zero accountability for anything, has zero involvement with her children save for about a 20 minute awkward phone call with the kids each week.... and I have to fight tooth and nail just to end spousal support. I mean, as bad as she came off yesterday - I'm convinced that if the judge didn't dismiss it then, then he's just not going to.

I don't get the court systems at all. The logic is so beyond fcked up.

This right here is why I am very thankful that I never had kids with my first wife, sounds like her and your ex could be related.

I have to say that I straight up think their rankings, at a very coarse level, probably capture a good chunk of the variation in talent among the signing classes, but there’s a LOT of fuzz. In other words, I think while they may be accurate, they're not very precise (imagine averaging all of your throws at a dart board and it’s close to the bullseye, yet you rarely actually ever hit the bullseye).

People like Barton Simmons are selling a product, are more likely to see kids in Nashville or Atlanta than places like rural Mississippi or Louisiana, and are staffed by people who probably have no real experience scouting prospects beyond writing for a recruiting service (see Rucker, Wes).

So, they end up riding the tailwinds of who is getting offers from big time programs (who have elite recruiters and resources to hire scouting services with real skin in the game, not boosting clicks and ad revenue), and then play it off like they actually see the same things the coaches see in the recruit (like Simmons spouting off about measurables and 7on7 reps instead of actual game experience). Instead, they just see that Georgia offered, the prospect is uncommitted, and bumping the player seems like a safe bet and will boost the flow of web traffic to stories about the kid until he eventually commits.

After crunching the numbers the past few years, and modeling in recruiting rankings, I have come to the conclusion that using that data is probably pretty worthless for making predictions and they severely over-valued our recruiting classes. When I plugged in that data last year, it said we should have won 8 games, but when I took it out, the model said we actually over-performed last year. In other words, the recruiting ranking data looks like it hurts way more than it helps.

It wouldn’t surprise me to find out the source of the fuzz in recruiting data is inadvertent (both Rivals and 247 are based in Nashville, and are thus biased towards local kids that they see a lot more), or theyre intentionally taking advantage of our rabid fan base by bumping some kids our staff offered to four stars to drive up clicks for revenue, particularly when a carnival barker like Butch Jones was good for business.

Right now I trust Pruitt’s drawer full of championship rings until he gives me reason not to. I give zero f@&$s about what Barton Simmons thinks about Harrison Bailey.

If you need, I’d donate to another round on the gofundme, and I’m sure some other folks on here would, too.

I'll go as far as to say 6-6 would really throw a wrench in things imo. Winning at least 7 with a chance to win 8 in a bowl game is where they need to be.

The last 5 games are going to be huge for us imo, all winnable. Scar, UK, UAB, Missouri, Vanderbilt. By then things should be clicking unless we have a lot of injuries. Winning 4 of those 5 should be a huge boost of recruiting momentum heading into the month of December when the early signing day starts.

If that happens, hopefully there will be some big name recruits that have waited to commit and we can snatch them up after an impressing second half of the season!

I've worried about this too as it relates to in-state kids. But the old timers say we have won plenty with Tennessee kids. As for fuzz relating specifically to UT's record...I think we've simply had terrible coaches. Think of how many of those kids (Jack Jones especially pops in my mind) came in good and talented and simply got worse over time under CBJ. It was astounding. Meanwhile Vandy has been beating us and lives off quite a bit of close by talent themselves. But they've developed and coached the kids up.

This.

Phil Steele has us with the 7th toughest schedule w-o-w. Guess he's high on a lot of the SEC.

7. Tennessee Volunteers (6.5 wins, 300-1)
"The Vols get three straight home games to open the 2019 campaign, but in their next four games, they face Georgia, Mississippi State, Alabama and South Carolina. Tennessee brings back 10 starters on offense, including its top two rushers and top seven receivers. The Vols are the second-most experienced team in the SEC, coming in at No. 21 on my experience chart. The road to six wins will not be an easy one, but if the Vols can secure an upset or two, a bowl game is well within reach.'"
Got to, got to, got to beat BYU. I might move closer to the ledge if we lose that one.

All my sympathy. That sucks, man. I will never understand why people want to hurt their children, which she is very clearly doing.

With all the talk of 247 adjusting rankings higher for recruits to the national championship contender schools. I would think if 247 is playing favorites.. it would lean more to which 247 team pages have the highest number of subscribers. TN would have been in the high 247 site page subscriber/click list a couple years ago... resulting in some of Butch's classes being overrated by 247.

It would be very interesting to know the number of subscribers lost on the GoVols 247 site after the infamous Haney article. I doubt that many of those lost subscribers have returned since GoVols 247 board seems very slow anyway. It seems to me that the TN commits/recruits have been more underrated starting with last year's class. Kinda lines up with the Haney article fallout.

Doing a little searching around because we are so not killing it with our skill position guys this cycle. I ran across this dude without a thread from the same school ole boy was from in Vegas that committed to us and ended up signing with FSU. Looks like we're high on his priority list and Tee is recruiting him but looking through his twitter seems to be a OU lean. I'm not starting a thread on him so I'll just drop it here.
