You're keying on the word history when the word meant to be stressed is "actual". No one questions the history part, it's just understood that those people didn't have cameras following them around during that time in their life recording every little detail. So yes, artistic license, dramatization, whatever you want to call it occurred. Doesn't mean it wasn't a great story or movie. I, and some others, just think Shawshank Redemption was better.
