UConn back to Big East

Yes I take it personal when someone says "and certainly not any women's sports"
I have coached this game 38 years and have seen a couple of hundred girls I have coached get into college on scholarship...they may not have been able to get a chance at college otherwise...SO to me, it matters more than you know.

Its not all about revenue...sometimes it's about the kids

Some things are about the kids. Many things are about the kids. The important things are about the kids. Conference realignment is about the revenue. We can pretend that it is not, but I think it is pretty obvious that it is.

UConn back to Big East

What does it mean for UConn and LV basketball?

For UConn WBB, it's a modest improvement in conference competition. For OOC,
not much changes. They now play DePaul in conference, and USF out of conference. Other OOC games will continue to include Notre Dame, and some combination of Md., S. Carolina, Louisville, Baylor, Stamford, Tx., Ohio State, and Oregon.
Overall, fewer and marginally better creampuffs on their schedule, and a less wearing travel plan. The better competition will probably make them a little better,
as if they needed the help.

The effect on our LV WBB program? Nil.

Much of this thread, minus the internal discussion by boarders who are straight males on their perceptions of womens' opinions and womens" sports, was on marketing women's basketball. I would ask how many of those who frequent this board are regulars in attendance at LVs or any other women's games. The more interesting question will the KJH becoming the coach result in more individuals (volnation regulars and others) attend.

And to partially add to the revenue question - many universities make considerable revenue from having NCAA relevant men's basketball teams and that sport drives the athletic department and alumni more than football.

If you expect straight males to support the women's game, then you should be prepared to hear out opinions. Marketing 101 - know your target market.

I've been to two WNBA games, both CT Suns games while I happened to be in Mohegan Sun. Lots of disinterested people in a sparse crowd, of which most did not even appear to be WNBA fans and we're probably comped the tickets. The environment was simply no comparison to watching the Celtics or even BC men's games, so I have no real interest in attending another live WNBA game. If any of my friends were WCBB fans, I'd be up for seeing Tennessee vs. UConn in Hartford, but that's unlikely.

I don't go to LV games because I don't live in the region, but I do watch the games on streaming services. Not as much the last two years, especially the weak OOC, with Holly squeezing the life out of the program, but I will plan on watching as many games as possible this season... particularly to see if KJH can get this team revved up for 40 mpg.

Your last point is an interesting one. I imagine that's true for most of the BEast schools, though I wonder how that revenue compares to DI schools with a football team. I'd envision that it would be significantly smaller, even for like sized schools.

I live less than 5 miles from the Sun Casino. The first year the Sun played we went to most of their games but stopped going because of bad basketball boredom. We support the UConn women although we are no longer season ticket holders. I got po'd at the UConn AD and Auriemma one too many times. We have been to all of the AAC Tournament games at the Sun and will occasionally make the drive to Gampel. In any case, those that think it's all about marketing and sexism need to attend some games and look at who is supporting the teams. Men, their wives, a few mom's with daughters and lesbians.

I haven't frequented this, or any board in a few years. And, I have not attended a game at TBA since ETSU vs. UT, I think, three seasons ago. No political agenda. No boycott. I essentially tuned out as The Great One struggled; her "emeritus" season being particularly difficult. I'm not a tactician, so I won't debate particular offenses, defenses, or overall strategies. But, I've seen enough basketball to know that, something was certainly amiss. And, there appeared a trend for the worse. I think the coaching change was necessary. I think it probably should have occurred a year, maybe two, earlier.

I know none of the current or former coaching personnel, and I never met Coach Summitt. I just admired her from a distance. For thirty-plus years.

Having said all that, going forward, I will attempt to make the 300 mile round trip when possible; and, yes, primarily because of the attraction/intrigue of Coach Harper. Recently, I've simply had no desire to be close to it - win, lose, or draw; gay, straight, or points in between.

I’m not one that sugar coated the AAC. It was a terrible conference. So, I agree with everything you posted except the “modest improvement” comment.

One other thing. Uconn will now have 20 conference games. That will lower the number of OOC games from 13-14 to 8-9. It remains to be seen how Geno handles that. Drop the weaker teams? Or drop a couple of high rated contests?

The bottom line for me is that even in a terrible conference Connecticut reaches the Final Four every year, so it hasn't kept them from being wildly successful. You might think, "Yeah, but they didn't win the CHAMPIONSHIP because of it." But really, we have no idea whether or not it had any effect or not on the Regional Championship games they've fallen it. Maybe it did? Sure. But... maybe it just wasn't their time to win them, regardless of conference.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out for Geno, the conference and the their school.

I have always considered that a great coach is a great coach anywhere they go
Now my point will be proven one way or the other.

There are many coaches who have gone to other conferences and failed...But Geno strikes me as an Alpha,, and true Alpha's,,, don't go to the game, they bring their game with them.

Now we'll see, what he's made of.

Wait. Am I missing something? Are you wondering if Auriemma will be able to be successful in the Big East? Is that what you mean by seeing “what he’s made of”?

UConn thumps DePaul by 30 points every year. I don't think he has to worry about much in the NBEast. Maybe the bottom of the conference barrel won't be as creamy and fluffy as the AAC, but I don't see any games on that slate that they'll be a threat to lose. DePaul and Marquette are pretty much all the conference has to offer, and Marquette will be having a down year this coming season.

NBEast is much better than the AAC, but still below the Old BEast which UConn mostly dominated...even with Louisville, ND and Rutgers all part of the conference.

The one record Holly never broke? the 3 game winning streak vs uCons. woot woot!

Well Yeah I admit I admire your trying find something positive In The 9 of 13 record favoring UConn overall and 0 of 4 record in Nc games. So of the 4 wins 3 were in succession ? I wish it would ease the pain of the results overall. But sadly it does not. It was an awakening and a foreteller of the changes in the game about to come

Regarding the Women Cbb fans, they seem to be a mixture of lesbian women/ couples and the white haired grandparent which my wife and I were before her death. Not too dissimilar to LPGA. My 45 year old girlfriend loves football and men’s bb or stated differently the fast paced above the rim game in men’s bba Me? I prefer the the pure basketball below the rim game which, while rooting for my Lady Vols, is why I watch as many UConn WCBB games. No one executes that better including the WNBA. I really enjoy the clinic those college aged girls can Putin sometimes

Sadly I watch them alone as my GF has no interest in watching the other team missing their bunnies and being held to 30% shooting by UConns m2m defense. For me, I love defense as much as well executed offense

I’m hoping our new coach gives us hope for our return to glory. I’m thinking she has the goods.

How about you?

It's a whole different ballgame when you play someone in YOUR conference!
He will get a decidedly more intense competitive output against him, his new conference...by the same teams he easily beat before.

You'll see,,,IF (and I do mean if...) if anyone in that conference is going to try to send a message to Geno, it will have to be the initial day they come to their home-court arena, as a new member of their conference. Because if "the new team" walks out a winner, then the host team has failed to represent their conference against a newcomer.

Geno will have some new challenges.

But this is where I can see if my assessment of him is correct.

UConn has always been head and shoulders over competition.... does not matter the conference.....

Things will not change significantly..... 5 years ago they were in the same conference.... it has not changed that much

Are they still up there?
Last time they won it all was 2016...SC, ND and Baylor for the last 3 years

I'm just saying
