The Kerry Blackshear Thread

James is a 5 star, but that's not a guarantee of immediate success. We've had some highly ranked kids come through this program who didn't hit the court on fire that freshman year. A bit premature to be counting on him. Add Turner and Bowden who, yes, are seasoned and need to be leaders this season, but outside of those two, I'm not seeing a lot to be excited about. Pons? Kent? Johnson? Surely you aren't counting on Gaines and Pember. They're a season or two away I suspect. UK's roster is far more "SEC ready" than UT. No way anyone could reasonably expect us to simply "reload" and contend in the east again this season as things currently stand.
Anyone ranked as high as James was should be counted on the se ond they walk on campus. Too early to be expecting 17 ppg and 8 apg, but he should be counted on to contribute, and probably start by midseason. First man off the bench in the guard rotation at the very least.

How many 5 stars have we had. Hopson produced 9 points in his freshman season, Harris 15. The only underachiever I can think of is Hubbs.
Stokes at one point was a 5 and he produced 9 a game.

Trying not to get too excited, but am having a hard time avoiding the UK fans and their obvious ignorance as to why KB would fathom to come here. They continue to ramble on about being an "NBA Factory" and being the better option to showcase himself being on a FF contender. I think its funny, because they aren't willing to say, what is obvious, in that Barnes is a much better coach from a teaching and developmental perspective.

All Cal does is pay highly touted guys to go one and done at UK, recycle, and do it again. He doesn't develop his players as much as he brings them together and showcases them. Blackshear is a good enough talent imo to pave his way in the NBA. He doesn't need to showcase himself as much as he wants to become the best player possible to succeed in the league.

A conversation with both Rick and Cal, and it becomes immediately obvious which one has the superior technical knowledge of the game. One screams and shouts at Pri-Madonnas, and the other is all about the minute details. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but with all the smoke, I believe KB believes a year playing under Coach Barnes will be pivotal in his development. Its' not simply all about being a high draft pick, but in getting the best out of himself so that he succeed for the long-term at the next level. That approach and the type of maturity it takes to conclude that, makes it highly understandable to UT fans why KB would envision himself as a great fit here.

Not sure how connected the VT Rivals mod is but he posted this on their board this morning:

"VT has a chance here - more than I'd originally thought they ever would - but the bigger chance is that he ends up elsewhere (Tennessee and Florida are the main contenders, though others are in the mix). A decision should come within the next couple days. If it doesn't come that quickly, I think it helps the Hokies' shot."

VA Tech fans are hopeful that a recruit for whom they had been in contention (Lok Wur, class of 2019) selecting Oregon this morning indicates that their one remaining scholarship is going to Blackshear.

This is the kind of tweet from someone who knows absolutely nothing about this situation but is trying to fish for mentions and retweets from fans of every school
It does sound like that, but Goodman is really dialed in and connected on the CBB scene, so who knows.

I do think it’s UT or VT, but other than that I’m truly not sure anyone knows, including Blackshear.

I'd agree and I think Barnes' coaching flaws aren't recognized until game day. His history seems to support a need for a change in his philosophy.

It is hard for me to understand the lack of postseason success for Barnes (one would think he would benefit from luck given how many opportunities he has had) but agree with you that I hope he figures it out here before he retires
