Weird...

I think Utah was game since Rubio is a UFA. I guess they got an upgrade at PG in Conley...hard to say considering he's older and double the cost Rubio was on the cap.
Utah is shooting their shot now with the Warriors and the rest of the west in flux. They were already a good team and this trade will give them a shot to try to do what the Raptors did for another year or two. They may have sacrificed a bit of the future to do it but if it works they'll look pretty smart.

So if Utah gets the 8-14th pick in 2020 then it would go to Memphis, based on the way I'm reading this mess.

Which would mean Utah gave up 2 first round picks in consecutive years. Chances are unlikely next year's pick for them will be top 20 though. So confusing.

If it's top 14 protected, it means that it won't be given to the Grizzlies if it's in the top 14.

Edit: I now see above. I don't think I have ever seen the protection of a pick jump like that.

Yes. I think they got around the rule with all the protections maybe. I think it's pretty likely they'll be in the 20s next year though so you probably won't see that pick til probably 2022.

We have two picks tomorrow though....hopefully we make the second pick a good one.

I just wonder if this leaves Memphis with any sort of ability to chase a big time FA...(or if they would even want to)

If they are shopping that 23rd, does that mean they will also shop Parsons? He's the last big cap eater on the team at this point since Jonas wanted out.

Randle and Jaren together could be stout...Tobias Harris is also on the market. Memphis could right the ship very fast if Morant is a stud.

Edit: Here are the specifics on the protections. Basically you want Utah to get in the 8-14 slot next year. If not you root for them to get that in 2021.
Nah, I would rather hope to get a high single digits pick in 2022. That's the first year of the draft including high-school seniors, so it's a double whammy. Higher pick in a presumably deeper draft.

Not right now, but when Parsons' contract expires they will be cap-rich if they want to build around their new, young core with some free-agents.

The Grizzlies are going to have to build it the old fashion way. I don't ever expect a big FA to sign with them. They can sign midlevel FA to add to their core, but I do not expect big time FA to sign there.

Now I think I know why the protected pick was arranged the way it was. The Grizzlies' 1st round pick next year is top 6 protected or given to the Celtics. Therefore, if they are top 6, they get it. If they are outside, it is given to Boston, but they wanted a chance at a lottery pick by getting 8-14 from Utah. They don't want anything past 14.

With the protections in 20 and 21, and with Utah likely being a playoff team both years, there is almost no chance you'll see that pick before 2022 anyway. And even then it's only if Utah doesn't get a top 6 pick in 2022.

Utah is in "win now" mode. Mitchell is still on his rookie deal, and Ingles is 31 years old. With Golden State being down 2 stars, some west teams will take a chance on a rental.
Conley ain’t a Leonard and that’s an expensive long term rental.

What do you know that we're missing? Looks like New Orleans got a 2019, a 2021 (top 8 protected) 2022 (unprotected) and 2024 first round pick...
New Orleans is angling for “considerations” in delaying the official date of the trade. That allows the Lakers freedom to give Davis a max contract...but it’ll cost em!
