The leader of Germany should be at a celebration of the Allied Forces liberating Europe from the clutches of... Germany?

And I already outlined why the Russians had no reason to be there. If you really want to get into this discussion, why don't the Russians invite us or the Brits more frequently to their Great Patriotic War celebrations? Because without our equipment from the Lend-Lease Act, they were well on their way to defeat. We saved their commie asses in WWII.

WTF is she gonna say “the German people were happy to provide you all with this incredible opportunity at freeing the European nations from oppression. You’re welcome.” 🤷‍♂️

And before Hitler shot himself in the foot with Operation Barbarosa Uncle Joe was good buddies with Germany.
She doesn't need to say anything. She is there to represent the country of Germany. WW2 was fought against an ideology rooted in her country many decades ago.
I see no disrespect with her attending.

As leader of Germany she, and the German people, are likely as happy or happier than anyone the Nazis were defeated.

We're commemorating a battle right? Only the winning side gets to do so?

And yeah, on second thought, Russia wasn't a D-Day combatant, so it has nothing to remember there, the way we don't show up at Stalingrad or anywhere on the eastern front.

True but she had no business being in the forefront, attend and kiss ass in the background.
Really? Is she to apologize in perpetuity for something she had no part in?
Obviously she was invited by the organizers. She no more represents Nazi Germany as you or I represent slavery.

Nobody said she represents Nazi Germany. But she represents Germany. And that should be enough for common sense to say pass.

Send a respectful statement and observe from afar. That’s what she should have done.

Disagree. There is nothing offensive in her attendance. In fact, looks worse if she declined the invite.

McDaughter went to Hiroshima last year with her study abroad trip. Was her presence at that Memorial disrespectful?

The US showed up on every damn front and every theatre in the war via armaments. Russia would have been crushed if we didn’t prop their asses up.

Perhaps we didn't provide manpower to the Eastern Front. But there sure as hell was a bunch of stuff stamped "Made in the USA" that helped them stave off defeat.

Ok we disagree. I can live with that. McDaughter isn’t a HOS last you updated us on?

No, that's not what I was getting at. She and Germany have nothing more to apologize for when it comes to WWII. She just has no business being front and center at the ceremony. She needs to kiss ass just in general.

Strawman argument. You're better than that

I don't remember much fuss when she attended the WWI commemoration.

I feel like all the politicos should stay away from it. Let it be a veterans (from both sides) with translators only invite.

I watched Saving Private Ryan again last night. It's as close as I ever hope to be in a battle. War is Hell for all who fought.

Full disclosure: my grandad was on that beach on D day.

I'd be good with that, politicians start the wars so.

Do you know what unit? I lost 2 great uncles, 1 on D-Day and the other a week or so later.

Germany today =/= Nazi Germany. Sorry to disagree with you, my friend.

Seems to me that the D-day battle was pivotal in what Germany has become, so showing up to represent the peace that was achieved is appropriate. Countless lives lost for nothing, but the resulting peace.

Sort of like if they had an American Cival War memorial event and people from the Confederate States showed up.

Just depends. Did she work on the Manhattan Project?
