Since there hasn’t been much to talk about lately, I thought I would bring this up and see what others think.
I have heard a few different posters in other threads say they think Maurer should redshirt this year.
IMO I don’t think JG will be able to get through another season like last year with the beatings he took every week. So I think at some point we are going to need a backup. With Bailey coming in next year, I don’t see the need to redshirt Maurer. If Bailey is as good as touted, Maurer will probably transfer before his eligibility is up anyway.
If we were to redshirt Maurer and play Shrout, who would be his backup? Who is our 4th QB?

Maurer's O&W play showed me a desire to play now. (It kind of reminded me of the desire demonstrated by Jauan Jennings in his first O&W game.) Of course, I believe Maurer willingly redshirts if asked. If redshirted, his redshirt will only last as long as Guarantano and Shrout are healthy. That said, my guess is he plays some this year.

Being able to redshirt and still appear in 4 games may help that situation if it’s needed.
That’s a good thought. That didn’t occur to me. It’s not that I think JG would be out an extended period of games, nor that he doesn’t give us the best chance we have to win either. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we need one or both of the others for 2-3 games.

First, the OL will likely be better than last year regardless of who the QB is. JG hopefully will improve as well which will aid in reducing the hits he takes. IOW's... I don't agree with the OP's premise.

Second, Maurer showed some good things... but he's nowhere near being ready to play at this point. He really did some things well that are both instinctive and an indication that he's responded well to good coaching at some point. I wouldn't call Shrout polished and ready either... but I'd try him before burning Maurer's RS should the need arise... which I do not expect or hope for.

It’s going to be an interesting QB battle in the future with Shrout, Maurer and Bailey.
Could be. I do really like some subtle, instinctive things Maurer did in the O&W game. He stepped up into the pocket a couple of times helping the OT's gain position on an edge rusher. He found the right lane to run through a couple of times. He threw some nice balls and even on his picks it looked like (IMO) more a matter of execution than a terrible decision.

Shrout has an arm. Some of his decisions IMO were questionable. He threw to well covered receivers (couldn't tell if they were the most open on TV). But he has an arm.

I hope he plays just enough to not burn a redshirt in mop up duty. Sincerely hope he doesn’t need to play because our line got JG demolished! They need to step up in a big way this year.

Stop throwing the OL under the bus. They're Vols too. JG's slow decision making played into the abuse he took.

I think it hinges a lot on their individual development. I don’t take much from the spring game. Shrout could surprise next year. While I think Maurer has more upside sometimes that doesn’t win the job.

I think all the QBs will have some good coaching and hopefully by then the offense will be much better overall.

that does not have to be decided until the season ends. they dont have to declare before the season. as long as he plays in 4 games or less, he can still redshirt. he will be available all season. nothing to worry about

It’s a flip of coin really.

I liked what I saw from him at the spring game. He’s got a cannon for an arm and once the game slows down and he starts to understand things better he’ll be the next star at Tennessee.

Dare I say this is Chaney’s guy.

We've only seen Maurer during the OW game which has no indication of how great the player will actually be. I will say, I was/am a believer in Dormady (in the sense of Peterman) but he never lived up to his 10/10 from the OW game. I liked what I saw from Maurer during the spring but a redshirt and 4 games (if he plays in those) will do him well. He's not ready to start in the SEC and he has a great opportunity to learn from JG, Weinke, Chaney, and some veteran WRs that might propel him over Bailey during his arrival.

Go silly season!!
Good grief.
He can play in any four games and still redshirt, so why wouldn’t they?

IIRC at least one of Maurer’s picks was a high school throw forced back across the middle. That said he showed me the fast twitch skills needed to execute Chaney’s up tempo quick decision passing attack. Looks like a more natural fit to me vs. Shrout.

I hope this year under Chaney he picks the right QB to fit his system vs trying to fit the system around our QB’s limitations.

If JG can’t successfully adjust his slow twitch game I’d like to see what Mauer can do.

After spring practice, Maurer is a clear third to Shrout. In that situation, it's unlike that the 3rd string QB plays more than 4 games, so it's likely he redshirts by default, even in the event of a JG injury.

Correct. This man wins a prize. Redshirting doesn't have to be declared. Prior to last year, the decision had to be made in the first few games, but it could be changed if injury situations dictated. Now, there is no decision needed. He can be eligible to play all season, and can play in up to 4 games and still have the extra year. With Tennessee's schedule and JT, the most probable outcome is BM will redshirt barring a JG injury. Harrison Bailey most likely will go through the same route. This is how you want to do it. Gives them time to physically, mentally and athletically mature before having to go out and take the punishment and pressures. Most players in college go through this in similar fashion. Pruitt needs this team rebuilt in such a way that only the occasional special freshman makes the field more than 4 games. We have grown incorrectly accustomed to playing, and needing, these freshman every year to come in and be impact players due to the insufficient recruiting efforts of previous coaches. If we want to be and beat Alabama, Georgia, Clemson we need to realize they rarely have freshman playing. Those guys are typically waiting their turn behind upper classmen.

After reading the articles on Botch and co., it's understandable why they left JG in so long even in games they could have pulled him. He needed the reps. Hopefully, and I'm going with the assumption that these Vols have bought into the new regime, those reps in tough times added to a second full offseason, in addition to having a dedicated qb coach, This is how I'll look during some SEC games this year.

It's not clear at all who's the back up. Then we have summer and fall to work through.
Maurer has a little magic...

You'll see soon.
