... And the current employer isn't being a dick demanding unearned loyalty. We are all adults, until one of us isn't.
I’ve done the exact same thing too. I’m not saying it’s uncommon.Funny you mention that, it's exactly how my line of work goes.
I put in a notice once in October...the new company -wanted me- before Thanksgiving, current employer didn't want me gone. Went back & forth a few times with the current boss couldn't give me what I wanted to stay. New job ended up waiting until after the holidays to finally give me a start date...day after MLK Jr. Day.
Was on a "could be this week" notice for 3 months. No one takes it personal if you're civil and honest with everyone involved.
I would have been excited over a Steve Forbes hire. But it would have been a reboot with the requisite time needed to build a recruiting base. But we wouldn’t have been worried about UCLA...until Barnes retired.I'm glad Rick Barnes is staying, and I don't care if it was only because UCLA wouldn't pay the buyout. It's a business, and UCLA is still a dream job in the eyes of many Boomer coaches that grew up in awe of Wooden. I'm just glad we aren't troting out Steve Forbes or Casey Alexander and staring a 3 year rebuild in the face. We get to keep our 5 star playing coming in, and it has to help us with our current players who have one foot in the NBA draft.
The only thing that bothers me is that he keeps referring to God wanting him to be here, when we know for a fact it's about money. Is he saying that he knew God wanted him to stay at Tennessee because UCLA lowballed him on the buyout? I guess they do say God works in mysterious ways...

But I think it does make people second guess your commitment. Magnify that times 10 in a public facing job.
To be fair though, if you had decided to stay, I doubt you would have gathered everyone together just to tell them you'd be gone if they would just have given you ____.Funny you mention that, it's exactly how my line of work goes.

Ok, assuming Barnes didn't put a single foot wrong with his statement, still doesn't explain why you would call a press conference for him to say it.
Fans may be naive to think that coaches aren't just mercenaries, but a lot of fans are naive in that way--especially when it comes to good 'ol salt-of-the-earth Deacon Rick Barnes from North Carolina.
If this presser wasn't going to be a feel-good, rah rah, endear yourself to the fans again, kind of event, then why would you even have it?

Once again, the discussion is why did he feel the need for this. So many alternatives to how that just played out. Including simple better wording. Just no reason to. Odd

Gator Hammock is awesome on chicken wings and firehouse subs.Somewhere on this board, surely there exists a Gucci of hot sauces (maybe even Gucci himself).
And when this person, whoever they may be, makes themselves known, get ready for condescension that burns with the fire of a thousand independent, craft, limited batch, artisanal suns.
I loved him. Now I’m meh on him and wish we had Bruce back. He loved it here. Barnes openly told us and the recruits today that he didn’t want to be here. That’s insulting
Well they should, I'm only at my job because they pay me...if that's not the most shallow form of commitment then I don't what is.
SIAP
I think Ubben's tweet is a bit more clear. Barnes was directly asked about the UCLA buyout, and whether he would have left had they paid it. His response seems honest and fair, in his mind he was prepared to leave if they paid the buyout, felt like since they decided not to that was his sign to stay at UT.
I don’t know if this is just me or what but during my career if I ever turned in my notice I would never reconsider and there were often times when the offers to reconsider were very generous. I always made sure I was committed to leaving before turning in the notice in the first place because I didn’t want anyone ever holding something over my head sort of like some people are reacting to the Barnes situation. I agree with them in this aspect, he has monetized a significant portion of the goodwill he had previously built up. Personally, I don’t like negotiations for myself but on behalf of my projects I’m a damn good negotiator. Before I went into the Navy I was in college studying in the field of coaching major sports. That was in the mid-70’s. I would have never made it in today’s coaching world. I’m not hardcore enough and don’t have that kind of toughness.
Got it.You don't actually think Rick Barnes decided to hold the press conference though do you? Pretty sure that was UT's decision.
If my employer decided to put me on the stage after I decided to stay and I was asked directly would I have left if company B had paid me more...well don't ask a question you don't want to hear the answer to.
I'm sorrry, but to me: "I knew God wanted me at Tennessee because UCLA didn't come back to me with enough pieces of silver." seems like a massively inappropriate interpretation of divine will.

Thought the presser was to introduce Kim English...as per normal the local media derailed it I believe.
