The Atlanta Braves

Albies’ deal is crazier than Acuna’s and I didn’t think that was possible.

Acuña's money is at least so high that I didn't blame him for signing it. The only reason this isn't insane for Albies is if he's got a family member in debt to the Russian mob and he needs $20 million right now. Or if, as Z suggests, the Braves know he's really 29 years old or something.

Think about this.

We gave Simmons 7years/$58M (Simmons had 5 years team control at the time, same as Ozzie). We gave him more money AND bought out less FA years. And Ozzie has a higher ceiling.

In these deals, both of these guys put the team first. I think that resonates with the rest of the guys. I think there's a championship in our future

I really want to onow how AA is getting these guys to sign these deals. There has to be some sort of under the table money somewhere
The only thing I can figure is that both Ronald and Ozzie come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The money being offered to them, while probably underselling their true future earning potential, is still life-changing. Ronnie in particular is a 21-year-old from Venezuela who grew up with not much and is seeing his country ripped apart at the seams. A MLB team just offered him $100m guaranteed. Would you take it? Perhaps Ronald doesn't care about being undersold...he's still making $100m.

The one that is harder to understand is Ozzie. I don't know Ozzie's exact background, but Curacao is better off than Venezuela, and IMO they undersold Ozzie way more than Ronald. Still, the $35m offered is life-changing. It isn't like he's agreeing to individual $7m deals per year before each season starts, and the team can cease offering them at any time. He's still agreeing to life-changing money, even if undersold.

Now if AA is able to get Dansby to agree to one of these type deals, I have no answer to that one.

Like even the Braves made a never made investment in Acuna. No one that young has ever gotten $100M guaranteed. The team options are more team friendly then the 2 FA buying out.

The Ozzie thing blows my mind. Maybe I get the 7/$35M, but the two team options too? It’s incredible

I bet some teams have tried to get players that young in the past to agree to deals like though, but the player said "talk to me again in a few years." I wonder if the Nats tried to get Harper to sign a deal like that after his rookie season, or if the Angels tried that with Trout. Harper would have been 20, Trout 21).

The Angels actually were able to get Trout to sign an Acuna-like deal, kind of...but it was before Trout's age 22 season and was for more than $100m. He still waited longer than Acuna did.

It’s almost a travesty. I know making $45M before turning 31 is an American Dream but he’s going to get so much less than his value.
True... but I also think of guys that turn down extensions like this i.e. Jeff Francoeur who end up flaming out and never really getting paid.

Almost a travesty is a bit much. He could eat a fastball and never play again. He is guaranteed 45 million, so that’s still a nice little cushion. But yeah, definitely a low brow move by the agent, or the agent is just incredibly stupid. I almost hate it because cheap ass Liberty Media got off so easy, and we know they aren’t the type to re-invest what they save, in the club.
