Has Hyams lost any credibility he had left?

I really don't think it was. I think it was about feeling a higher commitment from Fulmer and the administration. A commitment for the entire program which certainly included $ but $ for solely Barnes was only a small part imo
Just unveiled best locker room in the country. Barnes already highly paid and has been consistently increased since here. Very large increase and extension last year. Barnes top assistant was the 2nd highest paid in the country?

Just what am I missing here?

He was blatantly wrong twice yesterday:

1) He said there would be a Barnes announcement within an hour. The news didn't come until almost 10 hours later.

2) He said multiple times on WNML last night that things were not looking good and Barnes was probably leaving.

He will never live down the Brohm situation, but it seems like he's just consistently throwing out guesses and being overly confident.

Who can we trust locally for news on UT sports? If it wasn't for this site, many of us wouldn't know half as much as we do.
Sometimes situations are just very fluid. Everything he said could have been very true at the moment he said them. For example if a source from UCLA says a decision is expected to be announced by 1 p.m. that statement could be very true. But Tennessee offers a counter offer that changes things. I think more times and not Jimmy gets it right he's just a popular guy for people to hate on. News moves very fast in today's world with social media and Twitter.

He broke the Chaney story. Also was on the front end of this story.
He broke the Lovie Smith story. LOL! ... He has broken a lot of stuff over the last 20 years... mostly BS - just like his report on "this story" which he said involved a team meeting yesterday at 5 (that didn't actually happen). Basilio is not an insider at UT.

You’re a ****ing douche.
He broke the Chaney story. Also was on the front end of this story.

you're pointing out two correct predictions (and that's what they are) out of 2000 that he got wrong.

The reality is all of Knoxville sports media sucks epically. Every last one of them know nothing and are paid because someone has to do it. Most of them make crap money (because terrestrial radio has been a dead medium for more than a decade) but they still clamor for attention because its all they know how to do.

Tennessee's athletics department has had some pretty brutal public showings the last few years. If its not the football program embarrassing themselves on the field then its some scandal or botched coaching search. They are now as tight as a nuns anus when it comes to information. None of these goons can change that. Its a different world we live in now. Leaked info can travel at the speed of light and do untold damage quickly.

With that in mind, as an actual journalist, Hyams should choose his words carefully but unfortunately, when passing along what he considers insider information, he has been assured and left zero room for ambiguity when discretion would have been a better course of action. Case in point, this tweet from the November 2017 football coaching search:

**************************************
Tennessee will soon announce the hiring of Purdue coach Jeff Brohm after going 6-6 this year. Brohm was 30-10 at Western Kentucky. Buyout is $5 million, drops to $4 million Dec 5. Still owes Purdue about $750K for leaving WKY. - Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) November 29. 2017
***************************************

The scrutiny and criticism that Hyams gets on VN is deserved. His false reporting has contributed to the sense of chaos that revolves around Tennessee coaching searches.

Does anyone realize who the first journalist was to land an in-depth interview with Rick Barnes after yesterday's drama? If you guessed Jimmy Hyams, you would be correct.

I realize that Hyams earns a little of the flack he gets because he doesn't understand new media. He "broke" the Barnes news yesterday about 30 minutes after the fact. He wasn't claiming to be first, but his tweet was worded as if he were actually delivering new information. He's old school and still doesn't really get how Twitter works.

But Barnes trusts him enough to talk to him first. Fulmer trusts him. As long as these guys trust him, he'll be relevant. Truthfully, he remains one of the best in the business within the Knoxville market.

Always have to beware for accuracy, but i find out more news quickly from fellow posters than I do from some of the media outlets.

True however everybody was getting it wrong in that coaching search. It was not only Jimmy Hyams.. I'm not an apologist for him or anything but if you look at the whole body of his career he has been right most of the time. There is none of us that can say we're always perfect in our jobs. We all make mistakes. It's just the hiskett magnified more because he has a huge audience. And also when he says it doesn't look good that is an opinion that is not a fact. Sometimes somebody offers their opinions and if they are wrong we get that confused with getting facts wrong.

On Hyams, it really is all about sources. Jimmy lost his a while ago, and hasn't been able to establish new ones who actually know anything. In fact, it kinda looks like someone enjoys messing with him.

Honestly I'm not sure how he stays in his role. His personality is fairly unlikeable, and he gets cocky a lot for someone who's wrong so much. He could do that back when he sources, but now it's just difficult to take.
He obviously still has credibility because enough of you people listen to him.

Hyams is wrong more than he’s right, especially when he interjects his opinions. He’s a typical non-athlete journalist who doesn’t know what’s going on. Basilio is just as bad, was trying to run off “Retirement Rick” his first two years after inheriting a dumpster, but at least he’s entertaining. The night he was playing drums after Freeze was rumored as an OC candidate was hilarious (referring to Freeze playing African drums at Kongbo’s house during a recruiting visit).

You still listen to him?
I actually do. I enjoy his show with John Wilkerson. A lot of times he has good information. Sometimes he is wrong but that happens with everybody. Like I said some people confuse opinions with facts. Yesterday he plainly said I'm not reporting that Barnes is leaving. All he said was that he said things didn't look good based on what he was hearing. That's an opinion.

Jimmy Hyams hasn't had any credibility for a while:D
The whole WNML has really turned into a crappy radio show. They are the “spots” animal as in commercial spots. Checked on Ainges show 3 times and they had only 20 to 24 minutes of actual sports talk per hour. I know they have to pay the bills but it’s constant commercials and paid personal endorsements. Plus if you hear one show you pretty much aren’t going to hear anything but re-hash on the others like watching sports center over and over. Someone please tell John “the shouter” Wilkerson that he has a microphone and doesn’t need to scream in that high pitched voice all the time!

Maybe we are good at keeping our cards close to our chest. Maybe Phil planted a few rumors to throw the reporters off the trail while we got things done.
