I'd forgotten about it, but there are similarities in the two situations. Bruce was frosted about the salary differences between BB and FB and felt his assistants were being undervalued. Kiffin had gotten UT to pony up big salary increases for his assistants, and Bruce was mad about the disparity. He called out Hammy for paying several of Kiffin's assistants more than the entire BB staff. Similarly, Barnes was frosted that UT paid huge sums for Chaney and Ansley, while barely raising the salary pool for his entire staff. Barnes didn't forget that, and I'm sure Fulmer won't forget this, either.
People doing different jobs and such. They are all well compensated. But we are a football school, he knew that when he came here.

So his staff pool for 3 coaches is 975k and he's making 3.25 million a year.

A grand total of 4 million dollars (per year) and the staff were all "at will" (no contracts). I can see the gripe, but I also wonder why Barnes didn't negotiate part of his 1 million dollar raise into that pool (or is he even able to do that?)

Could have gotten his staff pool to 1.475 and his own salary up to 2.75 with just the raise he was given.

Hopefully he has a bit more context considering the Carolina Panthers rumors in 2002.

Not yet, but football is king. We need a healthy football program more than anything. Give Pruitt money for himself and his assistance, give him everything he needs first and foremost to get football back. That's what I mean.

Which, we have. Weight room, Fitz, Tee, Chaney, and Ansley (two $1M coordinators, right?). Time to be sure CRB is comfortable unless we want to go through the wilderness and hire a cheaper and riskier name.

Also for comparison Kentucky's top assistant coach has a 3 year deal and makes 900k a year with it according to the latest article I could find...

That's with his HC making north of 7 million a season.

I think Barnes making the program profitable and UCLA seriously coming after him will help get the money from UT up for the basketball program, I think contracts and more money for assistants is a good thing. Wish it could have happened BEFORE we lost Lanier, but perhaps that's what set all this in motion for Barnes?

Honestly, I already came to grips with him leaving after AV's post. If he stays at this point, for me, it will be like we hired him all over again.
