Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

I think it’s a combo of lacking a true desire to win at an elite level and believing we simply may not be able to win at an elite level. Reading between the lines of a Doug Matthews show a few weeks back, I think there are some at Tennessee that doubt we can return to the 1990s in the current SEC landscape. Matthews talked about a late night conversation he had with UT folks after signing day on that topic, and the way he phrased it, it sounded like those folks had doubts with Bama and UGA being so good now and A&m being in the league, etc.

For my part I don’t see why we can’t at least be Auburn. Not exceptional every year but at least relevant, with a decent shot at a title every few years when the pieces fall in the right place....

Absurd loser mentality amongst some "UT folks" smh. So, we scraped the absolute bottom of the coaching barrel the last decade, came up with losing seasons, and deducted "nah it just can't be done. We tried Lane for 1 whole year, threw the Dooley name out there, and even had Lyle for 5 years! Must be an impossible task". lmfao!

No one can tell me Bama or Clemson has geographical recruiting advantages over us, yet they are on top...but what they do have are top coaches. But they sure as heck weren't before their current coach came along. Shoot, UGA was teetering around before they hired a better coach (so far it appears). UF was on top until they lost their guy. It's pretty simple - all about the right coach. We hired a 1-and-done and 2 absolute bums and we have adopted this fatalist mentality??

Maybe some need to start mailing their checks in and keep this shizzy hot take at home. I can promise them Pruitt doesn't follow them and would kick them right in the rear ends and down the stairwell. Pruitt is on a warpath and has no time for people like that.

Hopefully Bone decides to return. I feel like most former players who left early wish they had stayed. The time in college is once in a lifetime and they should take advantage of these 4-5 years.

Bone could be one exception, I think he could improve his game with another year...but this draft class is weak at PG so it might be his best shot to get drafted.

Couple of things stuck out to me about the JG and JJ interviews.

JG kept referring to the freedom he has now. Makes me wonder if Helton was handcuffing him. We all know how Butch was.

JJ said he felt better this offseason than he has the last 2 years. When asked what helped he said they go harder than they ever have.

He should comeback because if he doesn't.......he will be letting me down personally.

If I'm a national writer talking about a team that's won 9 games in 2 years, I would throw the word "formidable" under every opponent haha

We have a decade's worth of winning seasons ahead of us to regain the national respect we have lost. The Decade of Pruitt.
I would argue that about UAB before I would argue it about Kentucky. They take a big step back last year and we ran them off the field last year.

There are 8-9 names ahead of his...pending other declarants.

I still think Bone leaves. He has other options if his draft grade does not come back as high as he wants it. It just sounds like he has decided to move on. I hope this take turns out to be very hot.

Deepest positions to shallowest:

Ocean-deep
WR
: Senior-laden. Still some concern about underclassmen behind them, but Ramel and (hopefully) Tillman can help. (Experienced) depth may be more of a concern in 2020.

Great Salt Lake-deep
TE
: DWA, plus Lowe, Jacob Warren, and Sean Brown. Freshmen have been known to start and do well, and fortunately we have JW who's got a year in the program, and Lowe has come in as big as advertised.
RB: Chandler can start basically anywhere in the country. If Banks maintains his explosiveness and fixes his fumbling, we can have a potent 2-back duo. Gray should see his share of reps, and Jordan has hopefully figured out how to squeeze through smaller holes along the OL. Also really like CFA as a wrinkle player at the minimum.
LB: So many pieces, such a diverse group. Not a lot of stand-out performances to this point, but I think this group has a competitive churn to it unlike any other position group on the roster. How many are starting quality, we don't know. But we could see a lot of situational subs, which may keep guys fresh.

Mississippi River-deep
OL
: We can only hope that continuity and S&C has helped with marginal Butch leftovers like Tatum, Locklear, and Niehaus. I've got good faith in Ryan Johnson and Jerome Carvin, and I'm so glad Wanya is an EE. Worried about Jahmir's size and Kennedy's health. Doubt that McBride, Lampley, and Akpo contribute until their third years into the program

TRECs Swimming Pool-deep
DL
: We'll have a lot more pieces once summer gets here-- Middleton, Williams, Simmons. We still have a lot of names here in the meantime, but there's questionable quality, at least outside of Gooden. Can Solomon stay healthy (and what about that waiver)? Can guys like Mincey, Emerson, Butler, and Allen take the next step? Can Taylor find consistency?
S: Warrior, and who? Tank seems promising early, but may be splitting time at the Money/Star position. Flowers looked to be figuring it out, before a broken collarbone sidelined him for the second half of last year. Theo Jackson seems like a player. Maybe Beasely steps in and sees meaningful reps some time this year?
CB: Alontae and Bryce changed the entire outlook of this position group last year. Buchanan got better as the season wore on. Guys like Shamburger and Labruzza have been non-factors, and are likely already recruited over with Burrell and Fields coming into the fold. Need Alontae and Bryce to stay healthy (and not get kicked out for targeting, Alontae...) for this position not to be a total weakness.

CB way too low imo. Not many teams have a tandem w the potential of BT and AT.
