UT jersey retirement requirements

Does winning the SEC POY twice count as 2 of 3 accomplishments? Just curious.

I'm sure Lofton will be retired at some point. I don't know who would be in line for football. May be a while again.

Next in football would be tough...does Tee, Peerless, or some of the guys from the '98 team get it ?

Since 2000, Eric Berry or Derrick Barnett are the only players I can think of that might have a shot. If both had stayed for their senior seasons then it would not even be a debate--just from a stats POV.

Berry has met the criteria (SEC DPOY, 1T AA ×2, Thorpe Award, Tatum Award) and he became eligible last year. What are they waiting on?

Not sure Barnett met the criteria. He was 1T AA and set the UT all-time sack record, but that's just two of the five criteria and you need three, unless the committee counts the Grantland National Rookie of the Year award. Either way, he won't be eligible till '25.

There are also NFL requirements for football that Berry probably won't meet.

THREE of the following...
  • Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (will probably happen for EB)
  • SEC Player of the Year (done, SEC Def. POY)
  • First Team All-American (done, twice unanimous)
  • Heisman Trophy winner
  • Winner of either the Sullivan Award, Draddy Award, or SEC Athlete of the Year
So he's got the college football part down. He's got that box checked. But he also needs THREE of the following:
  • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (very well could happen)
  • NFL Offensive or Defensive MVP
  • FIVE Pro Bowl selections (done, he's got exactly 5)
  • Own a major single season or career statistical record
So Berry would have to do just *one* more of those on the NFL side of things to join Peyton, Reggie White, and Doug Atkins.

As for basketball, the player must meet TWO criteria for jersey retirement are as follows:

  • First Team All-American
  • SEC Player of the Year
  • Played on an Olympic Basketball Team
  • NBA All-Star
Grant needs an All-America nod, and he's got his number in the rafters. Admiral probably won't get it. Ron Slay and Chris Lofton both got SEC POY, and nothing else. It's a tall order for both sports, and quite honestly, a little too strict.

Being a really good player for us is not enough. Needs to be an NFL HOFr like Peyton M. or Reggie W., Also someone who has never said anything but good things about Tn., and handled his personal life like a gentleman. ( just my opinion ).

Some schools with fairly lax standards for jersey retirement often have 3 dudes on the sideline wearing the same number. I'm sure one of those guys is a benchwarmer, but you'd have to be really careful to avoid putting any of them on he field at the same time.

I agree. The whole thing is overdone now. It should happen about once every 5-10 years. I also like the idea of honoring and even displaying the Jersey, but not taking it out of circulation.

Didn’t they change the criteria a few years ago (for football) to make sure some didn’t get in?
