That's pretty far north from where we have always stayed. We have stayed almost exclusively at the Southwind further south. You can drive on the beach up there whereas further south you can't.
There is not a ton of stuff to do at New Smyrna other than beach related stuff. Port Orange is only about 30 min away for go carts, batting cages, and miniature golf. The old city part of New Smyrna, (extreme north end) is fun to walk around. There are a lot of places to eat and shops and rental stuff. JB's fish camp has kayak rentals/tours and you can see manatees. Great restaurant too (See below)
My favorite places to eat:
Black Beards (Been there forever, fresh seafood, very casual, Raw Bar)
JB's fish camp (Way down south but on the beach side, take some bug repellent it is right between the ocean and the intercoastal WW., very casual, this is the place the locals eat, (Get the rock shrimp if they have them, broiled) You can't miss this place!
Norwood's is an old staple and a lot of locals eat there. If wine is your thing they have renowned wine collection and a tasting shop. It's a little more fancy but normal go-out-to-dinner beach attire is sufficient. It's a little more pricey. They have what they call a tree house that has tables you can dine in. Kids love that. It's really just a huge deck up in the trees that connects to the restaurant.
NSB Sea Shack is right across from Norwood's. It's a very casual, laid back, kid friendly place. If you like wood fired oven pizza, it's pretty dang good there. Their seafood is pretty good here too.
Boston's is one of my favorites. They have fresh New England fish flown in daily if I'm not mistaken. If you like fresh cod or haddock, you'll love this place. If you like fresh shrimp, it's hard to find a better place. They'll broil or fry about anything. If you like onion rings, make sure you get some here. They're the best I've ever had. Portions are pretty big here too. They also have fresh local seafood as well but I usually get the haddock or cod as it's hard to find that anywhere else. I usually order a combo of the shrimp and fish chunks (Haddock or cod). It used to be on the menu but I think they took it off. If so you can ask them and I bet they'll do it for you.
A place you may want to try for lunch is Chase's on the beach. I'm not sure how kid friendly it is though sop you may want to ask around before you go there. It's been a while since I've been there primarily we usually have a big group and it's not great for large parties. It is very casual though and right on the beach.
If you don't want seafood, you might try "The Garlic". It is very good and it's fun for the kids. It's among the trees and very cool atmosphere. It feels like your inside when your're actually just under the tree canopy. My wife and daughter love the place for the setting alone. It is very authentic style Italian.
New Smyrna Beach Steakhouse. It is a very good place if you want something other than seafood. Their steaks are really good and I can't say I've had a bad meal there. My group usually ends up there toward the end of the week when some tire of seafood (not me I could eat seafood everyday!)
We usually order pizza the day we arrive for dinner. We are typically tired from the drive and just want to settle in. We always order "Manny's beachside" They will deliver but it can be 1-2 hours sometime. As close to Manny's as you'll be, I would pick it up. It's very good pizza.
A place we usually hit once for lunch is a little diner called Pappas. It's almost exclusively locals. It's nothing fancy but for some reason we like it.
There's some other restaurants that I'm sure I've forgotten. When it get's closer to your trip, bump this or tag me and I'll see if I can remember anything else.
Have fun! We love it there. This will be the first year we haven't gone to New Smyrna in probably 25 years. As some of you know my mom is suffering from Alzheimer's and she's deteriorated to the point we don't think she could handle the trip. So we're going somewhere else this year - hard to go back at least this soon.
