He’s a good coach. Nothing more, nothing less. I’d say he earned that extension. And mason shouldn’t be thanking anyone, we should be thanking mason for helping us get rid of the diesease that was CBJ.

Vanderbilt football coach Derek Mason gets contract extension

Coach Mason has won 38.7 percent of his games and has yet to have a winning season or win a bowl game.

Only explanation: three straight over us.
He got that extension because he's 3-2 against us. Period.

He's only been to 2 bowl games in 5 years. That sixth win, in both cases, came against us. So not only does he have a winning record against Tennessee, it's the only reason he's gone to the bowls.

Who else are they going to get? Which up-and-coming coach is going to go to a school that's one of the hardest to recruit to, in the toughest conference in college football, and is guaranteed to do better than Mason?

They're smart to keep him. I don't think he will do well enough to bounce like Franklin did, but at the same time there's a huge chance that if they fired him, their next coach would be a downgrade.

Vanderbilt's the hardest job in CFB he's a good coach and he's kicked our ass, he absolutely deserves it

Why is it the hardest job in CFD? He has beat us but that is all he has done. No winning season and no bowl wins although he has been to a few crappy bowls. Is it harder job than Duke, Stanford, Northwestern to name a few? Don't give me the crap about they can't get players in, they are taking Junior College players that were not very good students in high school and couldn't even get into a Power 5 conference school out of high school.

He's like the 5th best coach in history (winning % wise apparently) according to 104.5 The Zone

Their 5th best coach among the 14 they had since 1955 (when they went to their first bowl), according to the newspaper article. Which would mean he is further down on the list in their overall history, because they were actually a powerhouse in the first quarter of the 20th century.

Yea so was Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. Nobody gives a **** about that. He’s earned that extension.

I would venture to guess that he will need a different excuse for his next contract extension other than his winning record against UT. I think that ship has sailed. But we'll see.

Go Vols.

A Vanderbilt coach “only” going to two bowl games in five years is on a very short list of Vanderbilt coaches.

Still hard to fathom that Vandy has a 3 game winning streak against us. Hopefully we can beat them this year.

He’s a pretty good coach. Candy lost 2 or 3 last year that were just bad luck. I don’t if he will ever be as good as Franklin was, but he is much better than I was expecting.

They've physically dominated Tennessee the last 3 yrs. Mason has brought the Stanford type program to Vandy and it's worked against Tennessee & Kentucky. He has winning records against them and ole miss I believe.

Tennessee hiring Lyle Jones was a perfect match for them. Jones eliminated any presence of physicallity in the Tennessee program. And it shows 3 yrs later.

And those wins have kept us out of a bowl game too. At least last year. Vandy has to love that twist of the knife

Well, Vandy football has been around a long time, well before there were 40+ bowl games. With about 50% of FBS teams making bowls, and getting a nice distribution from the sport's richest conference, and generally being a little bit better program now because of the James Franklin effect, they should be able to get to a bowl more frequently than years past.

Vanderbilt’s longevity has nothing to do with their post-integration reputation as the SEC’s doormat football program.

The extent to which coaches like Franklin or Mason elevate Vandy anywhere past that doormat status is a testament to how solid they are as football coaches.

Yep. They're wise to lock him up. It's a good fit for both.
