We know he was on a 3-year contract set to expire in 2018. This would mean that he was renewed last offseason, and nobody reported it. That would be odd, IMO.

No, but the reports that his contract are expiring are inaccurate (according to that tweet). Apparently he signed a 3-year contract last offseason.
