And for the record, Pruitt acting like hiring an OC is an afterthought/not a priority, is not winning a lot of support... unless he hires a home run... If he doesn't and our offense struggles again because he played grab ass hiring a dud, I and others will, and should be, on his ass like white on rice... big gamble he is taking early in his time here at UT.
I agree with this to some extent, but I also think that focusing on recruiting and waiting to make a hire until silly season is in full swing probably wasn’t a bad call once the top choice (Freeze) was off the board.

The last week of the NFL/Bowl season is always when staff situations become really fluid all around the country. If you rush to hire someone in December just cuz, you never know if a better candidate may become available first week of January.

Could someone update me on where all this JG is leaving/transferring discussion is coming from? Is there a fact in reality - other than opinions on his abilities - that is causing this uproar? And, yes I have looked back several pages, both late last night and this morning.

He graduates in May and has two years left. Speculation

Yep, he's got a good arm. Shrout was Helton's personal pick, so it'll be interesting. While Pruitt made a few positive comments, he didn't take advantage of the new RS rule to let Shrout get his feet wet. So no one really knows how he's developed, how much competition there will be and what the new OC will want. Wouldn't be surprising to see a QB transfer, though.

Shrout has shown flashes in practice too. Got several “Atta boys” from staff. Think it’s just a matter of time before he takes the reigns.

His footwork has improved, night and day over when he arrived on campus. His arm is live and he has a very quick release.

It would NOT shock me at all, if he won the job this spring.

Wish Pruitt would have put him in late in a couple of games. Would liked to have seen him in live action. Maybe Pruitt didn’t want a “controversy”?

I like Shrout and think he’ll end up being pretty good. I’d just rather kick that can down the road if possible.

Good but Mauer would be the backup. If JG leaves then we are chasing a grad transfer for another year.

Well, I think it’s pretty ridiculous the standard the guy is held to - a standard no one else on the team is held to. I guess it’s because he was such a highly ranked prospect.

It’s my opinion that most of his problems are directly related to 3 years of inconsistent coaching and the lack of talent around him. I’ve seen him be a top level QB when given time to set and throw.

The way he gets bashed around here is ridiculous and I can promise you we will be much worse off if he transfers.
I agree with this.
I really believe we could benefit from a more mobile QB and that would mask many OL issues but I don't blame JG for that.
While I think he would do great at certain programs, just not sure about here, now.
Odd situation.
We need someone close to Dobbs level, given our deficiencies or a miracle OL turnaround.

All D1 QB’s look great when they have time to throw. It’s a baseline expectation at this level, kind of like a bank teller knowing how to execute a deposit.

Does the QB recognize coverage and get the offense into a better set? Can he throw to the empty space the blitzer vacates? Can he move in the pocket when protection breaks down? Does he throw it away rather than taking a 10 yard sack?

JG is an unmitigated dumpster fire when it comes to these things.

If it’s really about coaching then Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t be light years ahead of JG as a Frosh.

JG is not transferring unless someone beats him out for the job. And unless we bring in a big time grad transfer like Francois, there's no reason to believe that will happen. So I'm not sure why y'all are having this conversation.

Y'all need to be realistic.

No way any qb is unseating incumbent JG. As bad as JG is the dropoff as we've seen is Clingmanesque.

We are still average at best at QB. And worse than below on the line.

Guys, I have a book some of you might be interested in, it is called Football as a War Game, The Annotated Journals of General R.R. Neyland written by Andy Kozar. My copy is leather bound and has a color pic of the general on the front. I have read it over the past 6 or so yrs. I wonder what it's worth? Anybody have any thoughts?
Happy New Year VN! Kinda surprised no one gave any feedback to this last night. Oh well, I was just curious what you guys thought.

Would guess the OC and style of play will play a big role as well.

And, JG and his parents read every negative thing said about him. I know some of you guys don’t think he’s very good but understand what you might be doing when you’re going at him. Shrout and Maurer aren’t ready - especially behind that offensive line.

I haven't bashed JG-- or any of our QBs-- so you're calling out the wrong person. But yes, the family does hear the negativity and they're sensitive to it. Maurer certainly isn't ready, but none of us know how close Shrout is to being legit competition. He's as big as JG and has a strong arm. But he isn't game-tested and who knows how much our OL will improve? Too many variables to predict.

Hurts did not enroll into grad school school at Bama the last I saw; he had just applied. I’m guessing he has applied, or will apply, to some other schools as well.

I like JG. I think he's a quality kid. I think he's got the physical tools. I just don't think he's got that "it" factor. I think his limitations are between his ears. I'm not sure whether it's because of his lack of/inconsistent coaching, or he just doesn't have the genetic makeup. For his own sake, if he can't get it done here, I hope he does transfer to a place he can succeed. Like I said, he's a quality kid that's worked his tail off and has taken a beating on many occasion for his efforts. I'm pulling for him regardless of whether it's here or somewhere else.

Not calling you out - just quoting your post to add to your point.

I’d love to have it, but I can’t afford it.
