Played and coached at a high level 35 years. Lot of very successful kids (including a couple from UT) who knew how to act right and knew there were consequences when they didn't. You can argue the other way all day and that's fine.

The guy held out a ball. That is not asinine. He didn’t do an elaborate celebration or anything.

McElroy is so PC. Just say it’s a crappy rule and it’s not football anymore. Some are egregious and I get it but suspend a guy for a quarter or find a different penalty.

Whoever wrote the targeting rules has never played a defensive snap of organized football. They expect these players to have superhuman body control.

Agree. Can’t remember the play think it was Bituli who makes a football play to tackle a running QB, QB slides, and it’s helmet to helmet. Literally nothing he could do. It’s terrible.

Iowa State has a choice on defense to not lead with their helmets. They choose not to. Don't agree with the rule because it leaves it too open for interpretation and tossing a player is just wrong unless it happens a second time. Understand the intent of the rule is worthy.

There needs to be gradient when deciding the penalty for targeting. If glancing, not launching, incidental helmet to helmet occurs, call it a 15 yard penalty, buy don't kick the player out. Save that for the obvious one when a player lowers his head and launches himself into another player's helmet. This sort of zero tolerance thing is just dumb.

It’s not that easy when you are live on a football field. These are bang bang plays and judging egregiousness is silly. I think it’s just as bad to block out someone’s knees as targeting the head.

Go Iowa St

What’s asinine is how soft everyone has become.

Oh no you scored and are celebrating.... let me be soooo upset....

Lol, get that weak crap out of here.

If you think old school is soft, then you haven't been there.

You don't need to be soft to show some class.

Taunting is not celebrating. You just showed that you beat them by making the play. You don't need to rub their face in it. You embarass yourself and your team.

Dont throw a pick 6 and you won't be in a position to be taunted.

Exactly. The defensive player made a perfect read and break on the ball and held the ball out (Taunting) nothing else. Yet the TD was called back, because of (Taunting). Which is a stupid rule. The QB would of thrown that pick 6 either way.

Was it a stupid penalty? Yes it was. But it shouldn’t negate what the kid did.

Just because it isn’t right doesn’t mean it should negate what the kid did by making the pick 6.

He didn’t get in anyone’s face and physically taunt them. He held a ball out. Oh and btw old school use to do that all the time. Look at Deon Sanders.

That second one they called sucked. "By the letter of the law" they got it right.
If that second one was targeting then the rule needs changed. Had no problem with the first one.

I do agree the penalty was egregious and stupid...absolutely agree. The touchdown should have stood and made them kick the extra point from the 18 or something

Do I approve of the kid “taunting” no I don’t. Did I do it when I played no I didn’t. However, there is a difference between holding a ball out and physically getting in someone’s face and actually “taunting.”

I mean by that rule every time a defensive player makes a sack and celebrates by themselves it should be taunting.

Taunting wasn't just invented. The rule taking away the td was just invented. Taunting has always existed.

Good post Sammy..by the way..Happy New Year my old NS compadre.

View attachment 185920Oh my goodness him holding out the ball was sooooooooo egregious.....

Edit: Btw I bet that QB thinks twice before making that throw again.
It was exacerbated by the fact he was looking back at Purdy and taunting him. That is exactly what he is doing there. It doesn't bother you...it does me.

Your idea of old school is decades later than mine (1960s). You want to see a touchdown with class (even though it's more recent)? Watch video of Walter Payton.

As to the rule, I'm not arguing that, either way. I'll offer one observation -- the rule was in place before the game, and the kid was stupid enough to put himself before the team, and get the penalty.
