You've highlighted the concern a lot of people have about Pruitt. Was he over rated as a DC? He coached on teams stacked with talent.

Guess we'll find out.

No doubt about it. History tells us that there are a lot of pedestrian coaches getting jobs based on just being near Nick Saban.

The worse the team, the more it matters. There have been lots of marginally talented teams that had great offenses because of great OC's. They are the CEO's of your ability to outscore the other team. Better believe they're important.

It's not magic, no. And just because you've coached under really good coaches doesnt automatically make you them or even a good coach.

But given the choice tho, up and coming coaches definitely benefit from coaching under great coaches no different than players playing for them.

His obvious disdain for OCs, even his own, sounds like Pruitt is still thinking like a defensive coordinator. I'm thinking at this point he needs to kick it into program building overdrive cause he still has a very unfortunate way of putting things.

My point was very simple....Tennessee had great players then, now, not so much.

I listened to his comments this morning. Not sure what you are talking about. When Pruitt opens his mouth it's like opening a box of cracker jacks- you never know what you are going to get. He seriously needs to take some classes in PR at UT. This is all a set up (albiet a bungled one at that) to announce Friend as OC. Not sure what the big deal is - just go ahead and announce.

When Cutcliffe left the O left, even though he left good players behind. Everywhere Cutcliffe goes the offense has magically gotten better, Ole Miss, here when he came back, and Duke. Cutcliffe is a darn fine OC.

I'm not going to determine what he meant by the statement but we see OC's with a lot less talent than we had last season doing a lot better job scoring points. They may lose the game 49 to 62 but at least they were putting points on the board. I think if we'd had an OC like Kiffin, Briles, etc last season we certainly score more points per game.

I agree with several of the other posters who have stated that the off the wall stuff that Pruitt states is just as worse as the crazy stuff that Butch Jones would state. I bet most media outlets will take Pruitt's statement and run with it. Not the kind of attention UT needs. Thankful for Coach Barnes. Pruitt needs to follow his everymove like a puppy dog.

Hilton will be an outstanding head coach and WKU will have a better team in their league. However, he will not win his conference unless he has better players than the other teams in his conference. The same is true for Tennessee. We will not win the SECE until we have players who are as good or better than the rest of the SEC. Defense still is the most important side of the ball. You don't lose if you don't give up points. I also realize that you don't win if you don't score. It appears, to me, that he took some big steps yesterday and will take more steps before the National signing date to have the offense in good shape when these players get playing experience. He also is rebuling the defense as he has at other schools, starting at the defensive secondary an buillding toward the defensive line. He seems to have made progress in the defense with this class. He still needs to shore up the linebacker and defensive end positions, but I think we will be a better defense than we were in 2018. CJP is the first real football mind head coach we have had since Kiffin, but I think Pruitt will be much more stable and not leave us in the middle of the night with a bunch of unstable football players who end up in jail. CJP also has the good fortune of having an AD who has a football mind rather than a bookkeepers mind. I look forward to the rest of this signing year and the future. If some don't feel the same way, you are entitled to those thoughts.

i think y'all are reading waaay too much in to those comments.
1. he said that OC doesn't matter if you have really great players, like at alabama or uga, how hard is to call plays there?
2. yesterday was about the players coming in to the program, and he wasn't going to discuss anything but them. it was the players' day.

carry on.

I'm all for looking at the context, but the entire full quote is not any better.

I know what he was trying to say. That said, implying the offensive coordinator position isn't important while searching for an OC is really, really dumb. There's no rational excuse for calling an open position on your staff "overrated", I don't care what his point was.

Actually that works both ways. For some teams no matter who is the OC they still lose but for others you can just plug in any OC and they always win. So yeah, we are one of those teams.... What do you say we withhold judgement on the OC hire until around December of 2019?

i think that's obvious for most folks freaking out over this. lol. at least you're honest about it.

ignoring the point, usually allows you to form your own narrative, and have hte ability to stick to it. it's a tactic that's used a lot around here.

You have some that cling to every word like the program hinges on the answer to a Jimmy Hyams question. And others that just flat take what he said and add something to it that wasnt said just to feel better about their position.

No different than the band guy he's not winning or losing games in front of a mic. If he dont fix it on the field none of this matters.

You implied that with better talent this coaching staff could compete with the best teams in the land. My questions implies; with obviously higher rated recruits than Vandy or Missouri we got blown out.

IEven for the slow ones my meaning with that question should have been clear. With that in mind I typed this response out very very slowly with hopes it will help you comprehend it better.

If you're still struggling ask someone at your work place ( one that is well known for passing the 10th grade) to help you cipher out all these hidden meanings.
