Tennessee has offered the most recruits in the country

How'd that work for CBJ?
His busts involved kids from everywhere, not just Tennessee. Barnett, Jennings, Gaulden, Reeves-Maybin, and Malone were good players. Todd Kelly Jr never was quite as good as some had hoped but he played a bunch. Same with Jalen Hurd.

This actually means nothing as far as the fans are concerned. We don't know what the criteria is for making an offer, so how do you know if the kid is truly deserving of the offer? Maybe it's similar to the prior coach making offers to a list of all 3, 4 and 5* kids.

Looks like Chip isn't even trying out in LA

While I wouldn't measure 'recruiting prowess' by number of offers, in this case, it is true. Chip Kelly's recruiting has been abysmal. UCLA is ranked #60 right now by 247. Imagine being a coach who went to a national title game 6 years ago, recruiting in arguably the best market for football talent in the country (LA), and you can't outrecruit Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Iowa.

This was exactly why I wanted Florida to hire him instead of Dan Mullen.

(Mullen's a much better football coach, too. Defenses have largely figured out Chip Kelly's gimmicks at this point.)

just remember those numbers do include offers made by the previous staff, so it's an inflated #. to what degree i don't know.

as for throwing ish against the wall, i think there are points in every recruiting cycle, for some programs, that you kinda find yourself doing some of that depending on how ceratin things fall for your class.

that said, i think if you were paying attention in the spring and summer, the way this staff evaluates talent and brings kids in for camps, there's a pretty concerted effort put in to evaluations. especially for mid or lower tier guys; off the radar guys.

one example for this class is Roman Harrison. he camped, they offered. i'm not even sure he was even rated when they offered him? can't remember. now, having gone thru his senior year, and getting some exposure, he's a 4* guy that folks are raving over, and saying we're lucky to have him. projecting him as a DE at this point.

anyway, not going to tell you that everything they do is going to turn to gold.

but i don't think you should assume that there's not purpose behind an offer and accepting a committment by this staff.

the top guys they go after, EVERYONE is going after, so you have to compete for those kids and you're just not gonna land them all. so those camps and evaluations are huge for having a bench for your class.

the two places we look to be struggling is LB and DL. everywhere else we've done very well. and we're gonna have to wait and see if we can address the front 7 as we go. but i'll say this, the DL committs we have (some may be asked to look around too) camped and were offered, so there's some history and experience with most of those kids. so it's not like they don't know what they're getting, even if we don't have a clue about johnny 3* that on one will get exciteda about.

It doesn't take much effort to extend an offer.

If that's what you think the extent of it is, you should have been a recruiter. All the work goes in before and after you extend the offer so the recruit knows you care about them as a person, that you'll help them get into the NFL, be a great human being, get your education, be a good father, man. What the recruits family needs. So no, not much effort at all in extending an offer. But I can see your point....not.

We need more help than most teams, stands to reason our offers would be up.

If a current recruit who is currently uncommitted saw that 440 number, what info would they take from it? I don't know, what are some possibilities?

I didn't say that, nor suggest it. My point, which is fairly obvious, is that the number of offers isn't indicative of any extra "work" or "effort."

I can understand that, but your statement of it doesn't take much effort for an offer, unless you have been a recruiter, you can't say it doesn't take much effort. You don't know what kind of effort is going in to the watching of film and visiting of the recruits at their school, camps, and talking to the recruit and their family before the offer is made. That was my point.

Recruiting doesn't have to be part of my job description to be able to understand how it works.

If Team A and Team B scout the same 500 players, and Team A offers 400 while Team B offers 100, Team A didn't put in 4 times the work.

Not to say that the coaches have it all figured out or not, but I trust that they know what they need to make the program successful in terms of weaknesses and strengths. We may be missing out on some in-state prospects, but I estimate that those decisions are based more on the interest that the recruits show in our program and who we really think that we can land of those prospects. Maybe we are missing on those guys because they have their eyes on other programs, or maybe they are not attainable or don't fit our needs if they are available. Just thoughts, no real substantiating evidence.

this was the thought when Butch put out a lot of offers. people were so happy that Pruitt was so much more selective.
I mean, anyone can just throw out 440 offers...it's about having the RIGHT 440 offers. Don't give me some guy who should be #650 or something like that!!!

Just get the champ to help...
