Without any realistic alternative candidates right now, I think Propst might be worth a shot. Seems very similar to the comfort hire that Butch made with DeBord, and that worked out pretty well despite what we thought at the time of the hire. DeBord had more (any) college OC experience, but Propst seems like he is a more creative offensive mind who has stayed much more current with offensive trends than DeBord ever had. Pruitt would certainly trust Propst enough to turn the keys over to him and stop meddling in the offense, which something Pruitt very much needs to do going forward. If we could get some offensive weapons in here, this could work.

Tooling around on Twitter, I also noticed this guy, @utjeffcapps who seems confident that the hire has been made and it is an Air Raid guy. Don't know much about him, but he has about 2500 followers, so not a complete rando. TIFWIW

And set the framework for Clemson’s offense. His is the more relevant comparison since he coached HS ball for 15+ seasons.

He was promoted to OC during the 2015 season, and they went from 1-7 to 7-9. They made the playoffs in 2016. They missed the playoffs in 2017 but had the same record as the prior year. Last year, they were 13th in the league in total yards. This year, they have fallen to 24th.

I think he has been a solid OC. The NFL isn't easy.

It might but shouldn’t once you get the players into the system who fit that style. I personally like the transparent accountability Pruitt provides by doing this and prefer we recruit players who respond to this by accepting it as a challenge to get better.

Well lets let Probst go to Tulsa one year and then we'll talk. If Pruitt wants to be here beyond three years, he better go get him an experienced, cagey, innovative OC. He got his mulligan with Helton. Doubt he get's a third chance.

I think it’ll be someone out of left field and we’ll get a post about it from Hubbs or somebody like 2 hours before the announcement is made.

Something like “we’ve heard Larry Fedora is a new name gaining serious traction” for example and two hours later a guy like Feldman breaks the story.

NO you can't guarantee anything and I didn't. You can make reasonable takes based on likelihoods. I can flat tell you, I wouldn't bet a $2 bill that Probst would be successful her, Jiff.

I don't have a big problem with the time it is taking to hire someone. I would be more upset if it were having a big impact on recruiting, but from what I can see, it's not.

I actually slightly agree with Hank on one thing about Pruitt. I think the Vandy game was disappointing. I'm not going to make a bunch of claims like the players quit, etc. IMO, at the end of the day, that was Pruitt's first "must win" game of his tenure, and he lost. The whole team didn't play well. Goes without saying, but we'll know a lot more about Pruitt's outlook as the UT HC next season because in his defense, we do need a lot better players.

The lid is on so tight nothing is getting out regarding this hire. On a lighter note, I saw Pruitt in Home Depot about two weeks ago and he had a case of duct tape in his basket. I'm guessin' he's used most of it by now.

I don't think there's any real chance that Pruitt gives the job to Rush Propst but it would be fun to watch the freak out that would ensue. Holy crap this place and VQ would implode.

And FTR - I think he'd do a good job. The guy is a winner and offensive genius. If you don't believe me google him and ask around. But can't see that happening with the family stuff off the field. Maybe as an assistant but not OC.

What’s being lost in the Malzahn/Morris/Propst comparison is age.

Age at time of first college job (if Propst hired)
Malzahn: 40
Morris: 41
Propst: 62

Is there any realistic candidate that you think would do a bad job?

Just wondering if there are any you for sure don’t want.
