The only hire that was blocked was freeze and that was at multiple levels. And to say blocked is a stretch. I would say we “backed off as a whole”. Briles was just a no Bc he wanted to bring 2 assistants. That’s not happening. That’s it. Yurcich is the focus. He’s the only candidate left that we have vetted and really looked into and dug into his background
Do we know for sure he wanted to bring 2 assistants? I mean we've heard all kinds of stuff, but nothing as it pertains to facts yet.

Pruitt alone is dictating the pace of this hire and he isn't facing administrative headwinds. The last thing UT wanted was a meandering, drawn-out coaching search with rampant fan speculation and criticism. The Helton thing was carefully handled to downplay a prickly situation, so it's not on Fulmer.

A lot of these kids don’t get an opportunity for a free education without football. A relative few manage to graduate early? They should have free reign on how those two remaining years are used.

That's my point. If the NCAA has decided grad school is part of the student-athlete paradigm (which they have), and the schools are willing to honor the scholarships (they are), then why are we forcing them to try and finish a bachelor-masters track in 5 yrs (including a full football schedule)?

Once they added grad school to the equation, 5 to play 4 quit making sense. Which is why I don't like the rule as instuted. Either get rid of it, or lengthen eligibilty for grad school.

Isn't it too soon to decide this one way or the other?
Yes, hence the qualifier, early returns and my injected opinion followed with he may surprise me. Verdict is not in yet but early returns do not indicate he is an "excellent" developer of talent.

5 years to play 4 works. No reason to change. This allows flexibility and that’s always a good thing.

These kids are going year round in many cases and are finishing their BS in 3 to 3.5. Getting an MS in the remaining time is manageable.

Guess I completely missed Briles' press conference at FSU where he was confirmed & introduced...?
Speaking of FSU, someone on TOS posted this from a mod on the Warchant site:

Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. - Despite some "reports" to the contrary, Kendal Briles being hired as FSU's offensive coordinator is not official yet. In fact, was told there could be some things holding up the deal. Not going to speculate on what those holdups could be but it does signal that there's a chance that this may not go through.

Now, I still won't be surprised if we get word any minute that a contract has been signed but for the first time since the weekend there's a real concern that Briles to FSU may not happen. So if the deal falls through, what's next?

If Briles isn't the guy, we've been told it's more than likely FSU won't hire an offensive coordinator anytime soon. In fact, it may not happen until after the bowl games are wrapped up. If what we are hearing about the potential delay in a hire is accurate, it doesn't seem like Larry Fedora is very high up on Willie Taggart's wish list for OC.

Sorry to rain on the parade of people that thought this was completely wrapped up and that Briles would be a great hire. Still think there's a decent chance it gets worked out, and that Briles is hired, but just warning our readers that this isn't as open and shut as some are saying.

Have we been turned down by multiple people?

FSU just needs to accept that they are no longer a premier college football program that is desirable for coaches! If we're being realistic, nobody wants to come there!

So we can have a chance with Fedora.

I would be surprised if Fulmer ok'd that hire. Fulmer is not senile.
Fulmer is nearly 70 years old. What if he is and we just haven’t figured out yet. I will always love Coach Fulmer because he has brought the only Natty of my lifetime, but let’s face it Fulmer wasn’t good at hiring assistants, which led to his downfall.
