Did Helton tank us?

Your suspecting ass is dead wrong. I'm more of a Braveheart kind of guy. Where did you get your suspicions?

By the way, although the movie you refer to is romantic fluff, there is some basis in history there. A Clockwork Orange was nothing but weirdo crap.

Yes! Braveheart is one of my all time favorite movies.

I agree with others that Helton most likely knew he was leaving at that point and just mailed it in.

More likely he and Pruitt were on the WAY outs by the last couple of games. Pruitt, in his lifelong jock, emasculating way, said 'your playcalling sucks, LA boy. My daddy's middle school OC could do better than this. This ain't Bama football'. He then snatched the playbook and Helton said, 'f--- it, this offense is now yours. I'm going to Kaintucky '.

A little bird to!d me that's how it went down.
Sounds legit to me.

Man, hell no. The dude still a professional and probably competed as such. Personally I think he ran the offense Pruitt bitched and cried for all year. Sort of like, there you go big boy, that's what you wanted.

Maybe Helton was indeed distracted...rather than developing game plans against Misery & Vandie he was picking out options on that new Corvette in Bowling Green.

Or did we tank him?
Most likely. Didn't CJP move him from the box to the field towards the middle of the season? Then (according to fans on VN), CJP was seen on the sidelines with the playbook. There was a loss of confidence that would make any employee start looking for a safety valve. I bet, when he was moved to the field, he started looking.

It just occurred to me that Tyson Helton may have tanked the final 2 games. Think about it. After an impressive win against Kentucky, the team looked completely lost offensively against two teams that struggled defensively all year long. Helton had previous coaching experience with WKU, so it isn’t inconceivable that back channel talks occurred late in the season to gauge interest.

I’ll sit here with my aluminum foil hat on, but it certainly explains how clueless the offensive game plans were the last two weeks of the season.
Paranoia will destroy ya....

The players tanked and played with little effort, Vanderbilt on the other hand played like they wanted to win and did.
The players on this years Vols were just not very good and even more important they didn't give much effort

It’s fine cinema by the great Kubrick. Such great dialogue.

“Ho, ho, ho! Well, if it isn't fat stinking billy goat Billy Boy in poison! How art thou, thou globby bottle of cheap, stinking chip oil? Come and get one in the yarbles, if ya have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou!”

Maybe Pruitt and staff Were distracted by concentrating on recruiting? Bailey said he got a lot more calls from Tennessee than from other teams. Fulmer and Pruitt both said it’s recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. I agree with the posters above that said there appeared to be disagreement between Helton/Pruitt so Helton felt he didn’t need this crap.

This is blasphemy, Helton didn’t tank us because Helton isn’t on the field playing. We saw how inconsistent our boys were all year, not just at the end of the season. We could play one good game but couldn’t ever get that to snowball into consecutive games. That was the problem, we didn’t have the depth nor the will to win week in and week out his year. Helton Might of started to look ahead towards the end of the season but I reject wholeheartedly that he tanked us.

The movie is derived from a book. The author, Anthony Burgess, basically created a new language within in it on how the Droogs spoke to one another.

I doubt he purposely "tanked" but if he knew WKU was next it wouldn't surprise me if he spent a little less time in film, with players, with staff in game preparation in order to familiarize with WKU things. Not to mention the distraction it could create in-game.
Yup, this.

Yep, and I am a big fan of the film. The long shots, the synth music, it’s one of my favorites.

Never read the book but I need to.

Pruitt called the plays vs vandy. Helton was probably talking to WKU right after the Kentucky game.

Shades of Doug Dickey in 1969. Tanks the game against Florida and then becomes the head coach at Florida after the Gator Bowl no less which was the last game of the season losing 14-13.

1969 Tennessee Volunteers football team - Wikipedia
Oh, I remember that so well. I never felt more betrayed in my life because he gave that game away before he left for enemy lines. Then we brought him back later on. Talk about a head-scratcher......interesting to remember that there was drama, even way back then.
