8 team playoff is a horrible idea. Because the format would be the Power 5 would get spots via conference champion, 1 group of 5 would get a spot, and 2 at large spots.
The group of 5 school would 99% be the 8 seed and would get demolished every year. To top it off, the head coach of that Group of 5 school likely bolts to a bigger job as said head coaches would be hot commodities and those head coaches would want to get to new gigs as soon as possible to get recruiting before December signing day.
So now you basically have a wasted game for nothing.
If any expansions occur, it should be a 6 team playoff with 1/2 getting a “bye.”
For the record, I’m fine with the 4 team spot.
Better than the current system where they have almost zero shot of even making the final 4. And I'm not sure what the coaching situation has to do with anything, it's already been like that forever.
I liked the BSC formula until they eliminated strength of schedule. Use that formula to determine the top 8 teams. I like the 6 team idea too. Separate the wheat from the chaff

I believe that the excessive amount of bowl games make the regular season not as important as a 8 team playoff would. 5-7 and some lucky teams are going a bowlingIt never ends, just starts the next argument about who is the 9th team, the 7th team, look at the basketball season. Regular season is mostly just an exhibition. Used to be 8, then 16, 25, now you to 68. Why not make it 128. Play ten games for seeding. Then put everyone in starting right after the Superbowl. At least then most of the games would matter. Every addition to the playoffs in football only makes the regular season less and less relevant. Arguing for Georgia to be in. Weren't there just in a playoff basically, and eliminated. So was Michigan, Texas, the regular season matters because many games have championship implications. 4 is enough, and they should all be conference champions, make Notre Dame join up in one and pick the 4 best from the 5. Non power 5, don't care, get in a league and play somebody, or create a second tier championship for them, they are simply the true equivalent of the old Div2, the FCS today is barely above juco. Just make the three different leagues and move on. You get one non power 5 opponent, either for homecoming or first game tune-up. Other than that, play straight up.

They don't need to be in at all, just because a team wins a meaningless non playoff bowl game doesn't make them credible. If they are that good, then they need to join up into a power 5 conference, otherwise, I don't care about some second tier team and league.
Take the top 64 programs and create either four 16 team conferences or 8 eight team conferences. This weekend either becomes a conference championship weekend to place the 4 playoff contenders or is the first round of a 3 round tournament. How about using this weekend for the first round of a 8 team playoff. UCF is not helping my argument but their QB went out last week and he's good.
And how exactly does one do that, just call the conference office and tell them they want in?
The play in game or games (depends on a final 6 or 8.) are played on the same day as the conference championship games. Then your play in scenario makes no sense.

The national championship is simply a champion of the champions. If you want to be the National champs you have to be a conference champ 1st.
Agreed. I prefer the conference champ games. I think we could eventually move to an 8 gave play-off. Maybe the power 5 conference champs and then three at large. Or something along those lines.
Had Ga won Bama would likely have gotten in the final 4.
That just seems wrong to me.
I know I’m in the minority with my opinion on that.

We can edit this to remove the play in game and replace it with the best ranked winner of a minor conference game. That forces everyone (Nd) to join a conference.I feel the same. But that might just be my hatred of Bama football. I feel more upset with ND getting a bye and not even having a conference to play for a championship.
4 super conferences, 4 team playoff. 8 teams would water it down. Do you really want to see ucf in the playoffs. I can't remember so many low tier conference teams in the top 25. Missouri would kill Utah State, Fresno state etc. What happened to strength of schedule.
They continue to find ways to make Notre Dame relevant when they're not. Comcast/NBC owns the exclusive ND tv contract which is why early in the season when ND beat what was actually a very mediocre overrated Michigan crew they jumped a country mile. Go back and take a look at where they were and where they jumped to and over by beating Michigan. ND escaped at home against Vandy this year. Just check out in the SEC who handled Vandy this season.
Ya....we’re never going to have a playoff.
Championship games would have to go away and they make too much money.
I’m cool with the current format. For one, I don’t think anyone has been blatantly unjustly left out so far, unlike the the BSC when only 2 were selected there was often disagreement on who #2 should have been.
In this case, Bama was safe going in undefeated ranked #1. They had demonstrated that all season long. UGA wins and both teams get in. But because UGA has one loss the SECCG was basically their first round. If both teams had one loss or been undefeated then loser would have been at the mercy of other CG outcomes.
I love the regular season demands perfection. It’s one reason I have always been less interested in NFL and basketball. Both require only to win just enough for the postseason. But NCAA Football allows one off week at most. Much more exciting.
