#1 Reason Why Hugh Freeze Should Be Hired

If Pruitt gets canned, you gotta think Freeze would, at that point, have been a big flop. Therefore, I doubt he’d have himself aligned to take over for Pruitt.

And If UT is thriving under Freeze and Pruitt, why would Pruitt leave?

The exception could be that UT’s offense is doing great under Freeze, but UT is still losing due to defense, special teams and general dysfunction within the program, then maybe you could see Pruitt out and Freeze in. An example of that was at the end of Bobby Bowden’s tenure at FSU. They were playing horrible defense, they were losing, the program was disorganized, but the offense was solid. Bowden retires, OC Jimbo Fisher takes over.

Lol. Set ourselves up for another Majors/Fulmer situation. Nice.

No. The reason you hire whoever you hire is that they can help the program win as soon as possible... not so they can help the program fail again and then take over as if that would happen anyway.
That wasn't my point - I think hiring Freeze would have a very positive impact right off the bat. BUT, just the possibility if something goes south with Pruitt, to have a guy like that already on your staff and a familiar face - slam dunk.

Hiring Freeze would be the BEST move CJP could make for his own job security. Freeze will make this team GREAT.

Conversely, if CJP hires a Google coach who underperforms, he's all but digging his own employment grave here.

It represents a change in the culture of hiring unproven sec coaches. Its a step in the right direction. As this day winds down and its not done i worry.F4B91BBE-A39F-4FB0-8A13-92C01FEF2535.gif

It can’t hurt to have Freeze as OC even just for a year because the door is open here for him in the future. Long term thinking.

Hugh Freeze is a good coach, that much is evident. He had a great record at Ole Miss and was an excellent (even eyebrow raising) recruiter. But, those reasons alone are not the number one reason why he should be hired as the Tennessee offensive coordinator.

It's because for the first time in a long time, you'd have stability. Why's that?

The number one reason he should be hired is if something happens with Pruitt and he gets canned, UT now has a VERY clear succession plan to plug in a guy who has been a proven winner in the S.E.C. into its head coach position.

I'm going to go ahead and say it now - if Tennessee hires Hugh Freeze, not only is it a slam dunk for the present, THAT will be the beginning of returning the Vols back to prominence in the future. GBO!!

I knew you were a closet VOLS fan. 😀

You really think that's why I posted that ? o_O

No, not necessarily, but with so many moving parts the preemptive measure covers the off chance. A little weed of doubt, insecurity, or fear is harmless by itself, but it doesn't hurt to stay on top of them. You don't win the game of Whack-A-Mole without the hammer raised and ready at even the hint one is raising its ugly head.

FYI....the current AD knows a whole hell of a lot about an OC taking over a program after the previous HC gets ousted....and hiring the WRONG OC and getting himself ousted...just saying.

Not sure I agree with that. If Freeze comes in and does help make a bigsuccess out of this program than Pruitt is not going anywhere, but Freeze is In 2 years time He will get a head coaching job of his own. JMO

I think you got it backwards. Freeze is the one most likely to bring instability to the program. He'll be here one year and bolt for a head coaching job. I have mixed views on hiring Freeze, but to me, the instability is one of the biggest negatives.

Or a better example would be Phil Fulmer since Jimbo was already named Head Coach in Waiting....

LOL. If Freeze gets hired it won't be because Pruitt is looking for someone to succeed him if he is fired. It will be because he has a great offensive mind who is available, knows the SEC, and along with David Johnson, will be someone else on staff with Memphis connections.

Or Nicki decides to retire and Bama comes back for CJP...

Dabo Swinney is the unofficial "coach in waiting" at Alabama. Period.
