Pruitt's success here will ultimately come down to recruiting. It's obvious to me, at least to this point, he's not the type of coach that can take make a bunch of lemons and make lemonade. He needs similar or better talent than his opponent. If he can recruit big time players, he'll do ok. One class won't do it either. He can sell immediate playing time, a vision, ect... but he can only use that so long. I seriously doubt we see much improvement record wise next season as we'll be relying on youth. I almost think 6 wins and a bowl will be required to build some momentum and provide evidence of his sales pitch. He must close strong on this class.

I honestly don’t know how to judge Helton’s performance. We have a very physically and mentally weak team. Probably the most embarrassing development of offensive linemen I’ve ever seen. But if he doesn’t want to be here well... time to git.

🤨 And you think my comment was silly? This makes no sense, Newt.
I can believe it. If the stories about Helton wanting out are true, and many of the players checking out, I could see Pruitt seeing the benefits of a bowl being outweighed by getting it behind you and making recruiting your sole focus.

A guy like 6 desperately needed more practices. He got exposed against Mizzu and benched yesterday. Sure maybe that's a good thing to challenge him mentally but more practices were dang sure needed.

Banks needs time on the practice especially if he is to be a LB.

Flowers needs time with all the time he missed.

On and on

All this talk about if the players don't want to be there the practices aren't beneficial is complete bs. It's up to the staff to make the practices pay off.

I'm guessing he was QB at Bama when Pruitt was there and they're friends?

Currently Cleveland Browns OC. Freddie Kitchens - Wikipedia

If you look at Pruitts staff familiarity is important. Rare you can get a guy like Kitchens who was a position coach two years in the SEC, has playcaling expereience, and was an NFL OC who will be out of a job at the end of the year.

Sure makes sense

He didn’t really try to do much to compensate for that though. That’s why I can confidently say he needs to be fired. I saw other position groups show flashes and I think Pruitt did an OK job for his first year, but it is clear to me helton isn’t good. His performances against Charlotte, Vandy, and Mizzou were pathetic. SC was the only good game he called and he didn’t adjust to Muschamp’s adjustments well at all

I have no idea who this girl is but this is exactly what I’ve been hearing for a month and is why i said weeks ago Helton would not be our OC next year.

I'll say this, Knoxville is an easy place to hate if you perform the way Helton did. He earned the criticism and I would tell him that he needs to recognize that SEC football is truly ruthless. USC isnt the main event in LA. You can get away with being suspect from time to time. Not here, not Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Baton Rouge. Knoxville isnt alone in that pressure and he got a taste of big time expectations. I believe hiring Helton was a mistake by Pruitt because he clearly didnt understand what he was walking into. It doesnt take much to be tolerated here. All you have to do is not look incompetent. Helton looked incompetent way too often.

Bringing back sapp was a mistake. Never should have taken him back and no doubt in my mind he was part of the issue with certain players

Regarding the extra practices. You 100% need that. Fundamentals were lacking majorly. The practices could have been used to focus on it. 15 practices is essentially 5 weeks of extra in season practices. All regarding fundamentals would help next year exponentially, especially for the guys you'll keep. No reason to not focus on getting your foundation better before spring.

Do we need to become a 8-9 win team before we even consider competing for titles. I remember when 8 wins made us angry. Give me that for 3-4 years straight and then elevate that further from there. Might not be popular but I feel that’s where we have to start.

Been saying this for a few years now. We damn sure better start appreciating 8-9 win years

This was my third game to attend this year (WV and Auburn), but this was the closest I've been to the sidelines/players/coaches... was between the 45-50, 18 rows up. I could see everything. And I wish I wasn't able to... it was saddening and pathetic. Even before we kicked off, there was no fire, juice, or swagger... After the half and the remainder of the game, we were just zombies going through the motions.

Alonte is just NOT good (of course among many other players) and didn't know what he was doing before almost every play, staring at the sidelines for guidance. They made him stay on the UT side when lining up so that they could tell him what to do... at this point in the season, that is pitiful.

Poor tackling, blocking, middle school play calling, no intensity, and uninspired play the entire game.

Mason and Staff outcoached Pruitt and Co the entire game, knowing and anticipating everything we were going to do. They definitely watched tape and picked on Alonte and others. The D didn't know what they were doing half the time seconds before the ball was snapped. Coaches were constantly waving and trying to tell players where to go and what to do... WTF at this point in the season!? On offense, they were doing whatever they wanted to us. We couldn't even pick up the RB swinging out of the backfield for easy catches...

Get Helton out of town now. Listening to UT fans after the game, at dinner, last night, and this morning in the hotel--- all were disgusted and embarrassed with the regression of the team, coaching, and especially Helton. JG was not talked about positively at all, and many during the game were yelling for Chryst and Shrout.

As I've said this season, getting flamed for it, but we are doomed for more gloom if JG is starting next year. He is just not good. He can't read the D, see or feel pressure, and stares at his primary. He is slower than Worley out of the pocket, and at least yesterday, had a noodle arm. My wife couldn't believe how weak his throws were, watching them take seemingly 5 seconds to get to the WR... I hope Shrout improves or Maurer is the second coming. Pay Taulia whatever they want.

This loss and overall performance is just as much on the coaches. I have given them a pass all year and are still behind them because of the lack of talent we have, but the staff got owned yesterday. Many Vandy fans were actually surprised at how bad we sucked yesterday and were fully expecting a battle from us down to the end because of a bowl berth at stake. They were shocked at how we just rolled over.

I was born and grew up in TN, have been a fan my entire life, graduated UT in '94 and have to say I have never felt this low after a game I've attended, looking at where the program seems to be headed. We have to give this staff a chance to get their guys in here, but I am not optimistic.
